661 channel drops out
« on: May 17, 2015, 12:15:29 PM »
I've been recording into a marantz PMD 661 MKII since I broke into this hobby less than year ago. I like it for its simplicity but started having an issue a few festivals ago where the right channel would drop. This typically occurred after recording a set or two, and I originally thought it was a cable issue. I recently upgraded mics and cables, and the problem repeated itself Friday night. I am tentatively ruling out my phantom power supply as it persisted when I switched to phantom from the deck. I contacted Marantz customer service and am waiting on a response. Any thoughts in the meantime?

sounds like you've ruled out issues with mic's/cables so it must be an issue with the 661.  Still need more info though... Other than the 661 phantom power how were you powering external mic's?

Mics > Rolls PB224 (48v) > 661(P48 off)

Pretty simple so far, as I haven't yet jumped into a mixpre-d.

I received an email from Marantz customer service stating that the product 'isn't supported here' as it is professional equipment and referred me to a D&M Pro in Rhode Island. Not the response I was expecting.

Just a tip for the next contact you make, Denon & Marantz Professional (D&M Pro), has been the North American distributor of all their pro recorders since shortly after the 2002 merger of those two companies. Before that, Marantz still had a separate pro division from the consumer equipment side where you likely directed your email.
The fact that you where directed to a contact point that is common knowledge within the industry as the appropriate help chain is not something you should feel in some way slighted by. If there's a manufacturing defect, you'll be taken care of, at least how my experiences have gone. Good luck!

Update: It took a few emails but Marantz Pro finally got the ball rolling and gave me a return authorization for service or replacement with Superscope Technologies in Geneva, IL. That puts me out of commission for the interim as I don't have any back-up equipment yet. I got some advice on another thread to consider the Tascam DR-70D as a cheap back-up but as inexpensive as it is, it aint flying with my girlfriend at the moment. Short of going to the WSP/UM/Tauk show at Jones Beach in a few weeks and actually... well, not taping it, might anyone have any last minute suggestions?

Why not call a Rental House and rent an audio recorder while yours is out of service?

I hate to suggest.....there's a free d8 in the yard sale. If he doesn't have blanks I can send you a few wrapped Sony 90 meters.

It looks like the D8 is spoken for, though that would have been a neat option as sometimes I feel guilty not having the techie war wounds that most of you all have. I jumped into this less than a year ago so I don't have all the experience with the older media, etc.

I would rent something in a heartbeat if I knew someplace that provided this service.

http://www.pro-sound.com  ;)

Though I'm not sure if he deals with rentals, talk to Justin M as he is a member here (jkm78). If he can't take care of you I'm sure he'll transfer you to someone who can.

A quick update. I purchased the DR 70-D while the 661 was being serviced, and had the chance to put it to work at a couple local venues as well as UM/WSP at Jones Beach. It was also the first time I got to test out my new Line Audio CM3's and I'm really happy with the results. If anyone is interested in listening, the 2 recordings are in my dropbox...

Neither has any post processing, and I'd appreciate any advice on how to do so. I have Audacity at the moment but for all intents and purposes have never used it.

And in the meantime, I received the 661 back from Marantz and the service slip says it soldered 2 connections. I'm not sure if they did any type of diagnostic or if they just put some air in the tires and called it done, but I guess time will tell.

Thanks all for your input.
