Every Wednesday i tape at a local band shell that gets crowds up to 1000. i used to burn cds last summer, but i just dont have the time anymore to do it. I was going to use soundcloud, but they want money after certain amount of minutes. So, i need to share this music with the local community for free and be able to listen/download easy (like LMA) does anyone know somthing like this that would work? i have tried a bunch of sites and everyone ive tried has had some weird quirk...    :djsmilie:

thanks!

have you tried asking the band for LMA permission?
Please contact me if you've ever taped the Smashing Pumpkins or a related group!

have you tried asking the band for LMA permission?

i started doing that but there are just so many band and it takes so much effort and time for simply one show to be added. I dont know these bands personally enough to be able to pull that off, but man i wish i could!

Community Audio part of archive.org
works (oddly enough) just like LMA

That is an inappropriate use of Community Audio. CA should only be used if you are the artist  yourself (in the band), not for artists that are not on the LMA. Cam, please don't use CA the way jefflester suggested.
If you have a problem relating to the Live Music Archive (http://www.archive.org/details/etree) please send an e-mail to us admins at LMA(AT)archive(DOT)org or post in the LMA thread here and we'll get on it.

Is this some sort of free concert series put on by local sponsors? If so, hit up one of the sponsors for space on their website or $ for the soundcloud fee.

Of course, I know that and that's why I'm asking this question.

Do you think LMA would be willing to host a page that is specifically for this series? It's only 10 shows a year and they are all very good.

For bands I tape that aren't on the LMA, I host the files a different way. I put them up on mixcloud so people can stream the show, and also to one of any number of filesharing sites - Mediafire, google drive, dropbox, etc. That way people can stream if you want and also download the files if they want to keep them.
A little more cumbersome than the awesome LMA, but it gets the job done, and gets the music out there, and it is all FREE, which is a bonus.

Are there multiple bands? Do you have their permission to share? I know that seems like a silly question, but I wasn't clear on that. If you're doing it as a service to the bands, I would think it would be the bands' responsibility to host their files. Getting them on the LMA seems to be the best way to go, because even if one doesn't have an exact URL, it's still easy to find a recording.

I could hook you up with a simple Apache site on my Linux server.  You'd be responsible for all the content.  I don't have endless amounts of storage, but if you keep the site space under 30GB, we'll be fine.

For example, here is one of the sites on my server I use as a storage dump.  You could make it as simple as that, or as complex as you wanted.

http://edookie.com/

Here's another ... they're both simple, simple sites that I use to share out content.

http://yankeehotelfoxtrot.com/

PM me if interested.

Yes I have permission and the bands love it. I used to burn CDs and then the woman in charge would sell them for 2 or 3 dollars as a fund raiser and all the bands and people loved it but I just don't have the time to do it this year...

Apologies for the Community Audio suggestions, but I guess I'm not quite clear why that is an inappropriate place to share these recordings. The artists have given permission and the sharing is intended for a "community." Obviously LMA-approved bands go in LMA, and bands that do not allow recording/sharing do not belong in Community Audio, but everything in between seems like a gray area. Are the approved (or non-approved) uses of the Community Audio section explicitly defined anywhere?

Are the approved (or non-approved) uses of the Community Audio section explicitly defined anywhere?

Here is the standard explanation of what type of recordings are allowed on Community Audio.

An important note regarding the "Community Audio" collection: Community Audio is not a place to park stuff - taper-friendly or not - that doesn't fit in the Live Music Archive. If an artist has not explicitly granted permission, their recordings should not be uploaded anywhere on archive.org. It's really designed for recordings of yourself, your band, or a band that you represent from a management or legal perspective, or public domain recordings, or lossy versions of otherwise LMA-friendly bands. I've also seen it used for band-approved studio material that doesn't fit in the LMA (a God Street Wine demo, some Freddy Jones Band stuff, Guster's "Pasty Tapes" series, etc.). If you've gotten permission to post something from an artist, let us know and we can create a collection for it - please don't just dump it in Community Audio. Thanks!

In the LMA FAQ:
Quote
Where can I find other recordings by [trade-friendly band] that aren't in the collection?

If the artist is OK with Internet trading, you may be able to find downloadable recordings through http://bt.etree.org. Also, check http://db.etree.org to find people who have copies of shows and who may be willing to trade. Etree.org has additional trading forums at http://forums.etree.org Lastly, you can check out a band's own fan forums and mailing lists. Good luck!

As you can see, they do not direct you to Community Audio.

I wish I could get through to him. We've addressed it many times but he simply does not want to follow the rules. It seems more important that he promote his recordings than to comply with the rules.

ETA: To cite Widespread on the Dear Jerry show is a bit of an exaggeration. While the recording does not belong on CA, WSP was only one song. What if the show was uploaded to Bill Kreutzmann or Bob Weir?

How is it an exaggeration? They've declined to be included in the LMA. Do you think it makes a difference to them that it's only one song? edit - shouldn't matter whose collection it's filed under, if archive.org claims to be opt-in, and a band has opted out, it's poor form for them to be on the site.

Yes, I think it is an exaggeration to refer to the Dear Jerry show as "Widespread Panic." A more accurate representation would have been "a mix of LMA and non-LMA artists."

I don't disagree with you. It does not belong on the LMA. That being said, I can't say there isn't some Widespread Panic song included in some other artist's collection. We don't inspect every upload to the LMA and CA. If the upload was put under Bob Weir and WSP contacted the LMA to have their track removed, it would be done so without any question. But, to me, it is a different perspective than parking it in CA because you didn't know where to put it or because you know it doesn't belong on the LMA.

If you had the permission from each artist, it may be possible. But, then we are back to the LMA permission piece again.

OK, I guess I need to strive for 100% accuracy here, even in cases where you clearly know what I mean, and the outcome is the same.

I actually visited the Archive.org HQ last fall for a special event, "Building Libraries Together," and was EXTREMELY surprised to be advised during a conversation about my recordings to post any live audio I wanted under Community Audio.

I have not done so, but it's been on my mind a lot. I wonder where we can host ROIOs and liberated bootlegs? I think it would be fantastic if there was a site like archive.org for "Recordings Of Indeterminate Origin" but I did not want to compromise the integrity of the LMA project on one person's advice...

The only things I've used C.A. for are studio and demo releases from LMA bands, with their full permission, and lossy items with the same criteria.

This could be a great boost for all those "almost lost" recordings out there.  They need a home.

One of the Archive folks told me the same thing. Specifically, if it's not 007, and there won't be too many shows -> CA. If there will be several/many shows -> get a proper LMA set up.

:djsmilie:

thanks!
Does a LMA collection need to be a band ?   What about a LMA collection called "PhilZone's Local Band Shell" or something like that to put this stuff ?    If the organizer gives permission and the bands agree, there you go... ?

I believe I already answered that question. No.
