Why isn't anyone talking about the DPA 2011c?
« on: August 01, 2015, 01:10:21 PM »
I'm kind of surprised there isn't more talk about the DPA 2011c. I found one thread but that's it? There's a lot of DPA fans & the specs look good, the price is right so what am I missing?
I know you like, tape for people's approval and stuff, and wave your tapes around like they're your dick...  but even you can't actually think section tapes from philips sound good.

Is this like the bmw 320i version of a DPA small d cardioid?  In other words not really up to par with the 40xx? Great piece though.

That's what I'm thinking, I had the 40xx in the past & found them a little to dry for my taste. These look intriguing because of the slight lift in 10k region plus a tight cardioid pattern with excellent off axis response. I'm just shocked there doesnt seem to be any interest in them.

Price is great if they perform. I found mine dry until I realize that a transformer pre is a must for my ears at least. Happy since I took the Vick off your hands..... ;D

1. A little big, at least, bigger than Schoeps or DPA 402x
2. It's not the "full spec" design of the DPA 40xx series but a simplified design to reduce cost.
3. They're still expensive -- you can have brand new AKG, Milab(?), MBHO, Audio Technica, etc. that are probably just as good for the same or less money.

Not trying to go out of my way to knock them -- I think DPA makes great products and I loved my 4021s -- but I think this is why you don't see more of these. For that matter, with some careful purchasing decisions, $1800 will get you a Schoeps active set. Others call DPAs "dry" and that is probably fair; it's certainly my experience that (a) they sound great in ideal conditions, (b) they sound less great in not-ideal conditions, whereas Schoeps seem a little better at recording PA systems regardless of location. My $0.02.
Mics: Schoeps MK4V, MK41V, MK5, MK22> CMC6, KCY 250/5, KC5, NBob; MBHO MBP603/KA200N, AT 3031, DPA 4061 w/ d:vice, Naiant X-X, AT 853c, shotgun, Nak300
Pres/Power: Aerco MP2, tinybox v2  [KCY], CA-UBB
Decks: Sound Devices MixPre 6, Zoom F8, M10, D50
