Sony RX100 vs Nikon S9900
« on: August 07, 2015, 03:06:13 PM »
Okay, I'm looking for a smallish point and shoot / compact camera for shows when I can't take my camcorder.

I have two options in mind, the Sony RX100 (v.1), which I can get a very lightly used one for $290. The video footage looks phenomenal but I'm put off by the overheating issue that people have been reporting.

Or the Nikon S9900, which I can get new for $220. I don't really have any experience of this one, I LOVE the fold out screen, it has a better zoom than the Sony, but the picture is not as good.

Any thoughts? Thanks.

After more poking around I've read in a couple of places that the Nikon has poor low light abilities which bothers me, as it would.

The Sony sounds PERFECT apart from the reports of overheating! Has anyone any experience of this issue?

I use my RX100 v.1 very often to shoot video, recording entire shows as well as a few songs. The only problem I've encountered is that when I just let it run, it has a file size issue and at 2GB it'll carry over to a new file. The video carries over fine, but it does not record about one second of audio during the changeover. I've never run into a heat issue. When I record full shows, they're between 60 minutes and two hours. I think $290 for a gently used RX100 is a steal, I absolutely love mine.

Thanks a lot for the reply. Well I went for it and got the RX100. I've used it twice since I got it and I think it's a keeper.

I recorded a show in a bar on Thursday and at 30 minutes, the symbol came up to warn it was getting warm. The show ended up being 90 minutes long and it made it throughout.

Last night I recorded a 40 minute set, outdoors in humid Ft Worth, and at around 15 minutes, it popped up, but again, I managed to capture the whole thing. This one I was VERY pleased with, as it was in a very dimly lit courtyard. I know for a fact that my camcorder would have struggled and there would have been a LOT of grain. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EQnfVCUgJP4&feature=youtu.be

I generally capture external audio, them sync in post, so the slight break when the file ends is not a problem. I got external audio on the clip above but due to the layout of the band / crowd, it was pretty hard to get an even recording, so it's quite washboard heavy.

So far I've been very pleased.

I think you'll love the performance in low light. I regularly shoot at 3200 and get very nice mages and video with mediocre stage lighting in a dark club. I get acceptable images at 6400 in a cave-like setting that usually has atrocious lighting. It's a very forgiving yet powerful camera in a deceptively pedestrian package.

IMO those cameras aren't comparable
Sony has way bigger sensor* = good low light performance BUT little optical zoom

If you need zoom _ I'd go Panasonic as image stabilzation is better. Guess it dpends on where yo shoot form typically

* 1" vs  1/2.3"

My rx100 V.1. has a 30 minute file limitation.

Does yours not have this limitation,  trubbaman?

I don't think it does, I think it's a file size limitation for when it starts a new file. I'm going to see if I can find some where I just let it run for a full show and conform that though.
