A number of them descend from dutch/french/german acronyms for organizations that developed the setups originally. They don't really give any indication as to what the setup actually is in terms of the angle and distance between capsules. What's more important is knowing the distance/angle associated with each. Even more important, in my opinion, is knowing how/when to deviate from those standards, given your particular recording situation, to make best use of the direct versus reflected sound. In farther back or narrow room situations, an example would be closing in on the angle between capsules and increasing the space between them. XY doesn't stand for anything other than crossed coincident capsules.

"PAS", however, is pointed at stacks.

As always (specifically, page 2):

DINa=17cm/90* meant mainly for hypers/supercards
DIN=20cm/90* meant for cards
ORTF=17cm/110* meant for cards
Wide ORTF=27cm/110* on my old NOLABar, I liked this one with mk21 Subcards
NOS=30cm/90* meant for cards and wider capsules
PAS=Pointed At Stacks
POS=Pointed Outside Stacks
PIS=Pointed Inside Stacks
XY=90* one above the other meant for cards

That said, I have deviated from those a bunch over the years, and sometimes like to run my supercards NOS to widen them up when I'm FOB/DFC! These days, I typically run DINa[mk41's] and DIN/NOS/ORTF[mk4's]! If I'm in an awkward location, I will run PAS, but 90% of what I tape, I'm in a good spot/location and can run DINa + DIN/NOS/ORTF!

Handy visualization program.

http://www.sengpielaudio.com/Visualization-NOS-E.htm

You can choose the different patterns on the left and it gives the technical details of what the pattern is on the right.

Good time for the usual plug in these threads promoting Michael William's Stereo Zoom paper and tables.  The paper explains the interrelationship between polar pattern, angle and spacing between a pair of microphones used for 2-channel stereo recording and the effect on imaging and reverberant qualities.  All the above acronym patterns can be understood as representing specific points along the stereo zoom curves.  By understanding the relationships the recordist can modify the pattern/spacing/angle relationships in flexible ways to best suit the situation.

He's extended the Stereo Zoom to arrays of from 2 up to 7 microphones (MMAD for Multi-Microphone Array Design < link to the hyperlinked chart selector at his website), which may be useful to some here as I see more folks are exploring 3 microphone configurations.  Note that all the William's arrays use identical mics at all positions, so MMAD charts will not be directly applicable for optimizing the more typical 3-mic taper setups such as using a single cardioid or supercard between a pair of spaced omnis, but is suitable for 3-cardioids or supercards and enlightening to check out for those getting deeper into the "how it works" side of microphone setup configurations.

Here's another on-line visualization tool- http://www.hauptmikrofon.de/stereo-3d/image-assistant.  This one provides additional useful information, as well as visualizing 3-mic configs including those which use different polar pattern mics, but isn't as straightforward and simple to understand as the Sengpiel Audio one.

A lot of people run a race to see who is the fastest. I run to see who has the most guts, who can punish himself into exhausting pace, and then at the end, punish himself even more.

That's cool.

Coincident? 6 feet apart?  Somewhere in between? Big difference there.  ;)
