Mix Desk?
« on: March 16, 2016, 08:59:36 AM »

My music room/office/spare bedroom is a mess. I think a desk designed for mixing might be part of the solution. Need something with a few spaces for rack gear, a monitor shelf that can hold a pair of Acoustic Research M2s and a desk surface big enough for a big laptop. Also thinking of getting a souped up desktop later so that's in play as well.

Best candidate I've found is this one from Guitar Center although it doesn't have a place for a tower or a keyboard shelf for when I go with a desktop computer down the road.

Like to keep it around $350.

Anyone?

Well that dashed my idea... I blew past that.. Ah might as well show you.  I have been in the same boat... been saving for what I want and the ideas I have come up with...

I haven't found what I want preconfigured so I thought I would make my own with the components I like..and features I want.

This is the desk I will get...  it is from versa tables it is called the signature series desk I will configure it in all black 30" deep and 72" long. See the customize tab

Across the top of the desk will be three Raxxess ER-04 table top racks for different components.
The ER-04's are only 15" deep.. that should give me enough desktop space for writing and doing normal desk stuff.

If you don't want that big you can get a 30" deep, 48" long desk and just get two raxxess racks...

Almost forgot I am also adding the "enclose CPU holder" for my computer to sit in underneath..

Either way it gives me storage, space and a combination of what I am looking for and is solidly built...

Good luck in your search...

Peace .... OOK

I had bookmarked a DIY desk a few years ago. Luckily it was on the first external hd I checked, May be bigger than what you're looking for http://www.ikeahackers.net/2012/01/music-producing-desk.html  Reading the comments it appears some of the parts are no longer available but http://ikea.michaelburri.ch/ has a detailed parts list for the original and a couple of suggestions for alternative parts. Even if you don't want to go the Ikea route perhaps you'll get some ideas of how you could DIY.

Some other parts which you may be able to use to get closer to what you want. http://blog.dubspot.com/ikea-studio-hacks-build-creative-space-budget/

I finally bit the bullet and bought a desk. Went with one of these https://www.amazon.com/Studio-RTA-Work-Station-Maple/dp/B01MYZEOM9/ref=sr_1_43?ie=UTF8&qid=1492282712&sr=8-43&keywords=desk+studio

Guitar Center sells them but they wanted $80 to ship it the store for pickup! I have Amazon Prime so I got it shipped for free. Put it together in about an hour by myself.

Has 4 rack spaces on each side under the monitor shelf and the big under shelf holds my powered subwoofer just fine. Plenty of room in the rack for a power conditioner, my monitor amp, a couple of old school Digitech DSP rack effect units that I like to play around with when I'm tracking out songs, a shelf for my Focusrite USB interface and room for HDDs as well. The rack rails are not perfect - I can't fit four things on the left side.

Has really tidied up my space and my monitors are finally spaced right and at the correct height. They might end up turned on their sides for real critical stuff - they are kinda tall and shoot over my head a little.

Almost forgot to mention...I put it together in the big open area of my loft since there was more room to work and then couldn't get it through the door of the room where it was going to live. Popped the door off the hinges and then it fit.

Late to this thread but just wanted to mention that my old roommate has had this same desk for his home studio for at least 12-13 years.  He was very happy with it and it housed just about everything he was using.  He must still like it as it made the move from NY to FL with him.  Hope it works out well for you, goodcooker!
