TSKB: vid- I pulled Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0...
« on: June 03, 2017, 10:19:04 AM »
So when Adobe dumped/orphaned all that software back in '13, I pulled down the video editor Premiere Pro while I was at it.

I'm trying to get it to work but apparently this version won't read MP4 files, which is what my camera produces. There is one other format that I suspect it will have trouble with, AVCHD.

Am I stuck with file conversions and if so, is there a decent free option out there?

TIA

I have ZERO experience with this, but...

https://videoconverter.wondershare.com/convert-mp4/mp4-to-adobe-premiere.html

Also I have seen that some folks report they rename the .mp4 to .mov and Pro will import it.

Good luck!

Unless you're trying to edit 4k videos, there's the free version of DaVinci Resolve (available for Windows, Linux and Mac):
https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve

Just one drawback: If memory serves, DaVinci Resolve can't play embedded AC3 audio streams in AVCHD files while editing videos.
So you might have to convert the audio stream into a different format (like *.wav) first.

Re. video file conversions: ffmpeg / avconv will convert pretty much any audio or video format.
https://ffmpeg.org
https://libav.org/avconv.html

One other option would be to remux your videos into a different container format:
MP4Box / GPAC (https://gpac.wp.imt.fr/mp4box/) or tsMuxeR GUI (https://www.videohelp.com/software/tsMuxeR) will do the trick.

I must have been speaking Chinese, cuz most of what  you guys said is Greek to me!   ;D

I'll try a renaming of the extension just for fun.

What I saw on YouTube for the CC version of this is that I can mix my aud file(s) wav/mp3 and a vid file that may or may not have aud. Mine will. It provides a switch to mute the vid audio and still use the separate aud file. I suspect they all will do this.

I'll start to digest some of those links and see if it sinks in.

Thanks!

A quick google search turns up that *.mov is one of the supported container formats in Premiere Pro 2.0.
So, everything you'd have to do is to convert the container format without altering (reencoding) the actual content.

Code: [Select]
ffmpeg -i input_file.mp4 -acodec copy -vcodec copy -f mov output_file.mov

So, I just drop that string into a command window? substituting my file names for the bold edits of course.

ffmpeg -i input_file.mp4 -acodec copy -vcodec copy -f mov output_file.mov

I thought a simple "renaming" was too easy.

Correct. Simply renaming the files probably won't do the trick even though different container
formats might contain e.g. h264 video streams and ac3 audio. There will be a difference in the file headers.
Let ffmpeg fix the container specific data for you.

Well, it wasn't painless, but I'll live. I managed to convert the MP4 to a .mov but the frame has been truncated by about 1/4 all around.  I'm working with it for practice but it ain't right.

Thanks for any continued support.

I pulled that GoPro app but before it will open it wants me to register my camera, presumably a GoPro. It also loaded a "Studio" app that appears to be very utilitarian and might let me add existing content. We'll  see. Thanks
