Transformers? (Shure A95U)
« on: October 31, 2005, 04:51:05 PM »
Is anyone out there using tranformers?  I've got a couple Shure A95U tranformers.  They're 75-300ohm on the lo-z size and 4300ohm on the high-Z side.  Something like 22dB gain they say.  These are (supposedly) a bit better then the A85 version.

I'm thinking of putting this in front of a pair of AT853 and driving line in on a NJB3 or MD.  Is that going to sound better than using a (cheap, built in) mic preamp?  I guess I'll give it a try and let people know...

i'm using line transformers into a AD500e- And it sounds great.  I love the small package, no powering issues; and yes, its been confirmed, they sound a hell of a lot better than cheap mic pres, much more quiet.

I use  AT CP8201's in my travel rig...been real happy with them the output though is 50KOhm so they might not be good for load impedences  much less than that. I run them into and SBM-1 which has a 47 KOhm input load impedance which is just right for these.

And a definite yes on these sounding better than cheep mic pre's and good mic pre's for that matter.
