Title: Field Powering PSP-2?
Post by: rigpimp on August 21, 2016, 04:38:51 PM
I just scored one.   :yahoo:

Any tips on remote power?  I have DVD batteries and a Naztech15000.

What is the input voltage range ?

5v to 9v external.

Not sure I trust the Naztech now.

I just discovered that it introduced noise onto 2 days worth of CCM4 > Sonosax recordings while powering the Sax.

How can DC voltage cause noise? Are you sure it's not the Sonosax? You said it was fine at 12v?!

I've always used an external 9v DVD battery to power mine.

I've never seen it before either.  I would say that it might be the Sax as it ran fine on day 3 with internals but I ran it at 12v for Jeff Austin last week and it was fine.

The PSP2 is very easy to power! They take 5V, 500 mA, so it is compatible with these cell phone charger batteries that are ubiquitous. You need a USB > plug cable, and you can go to Radioshack to get an adaptaplug cable with the appropriate plug.

I usually put in the 6 AA batteries, then plug in the external. I've never had a situation where I ran out of the external, but in case I do, it will switch to the internals.

A lot of the dc power solutions use voltage regulators to adjust their cells' native voltage to the required output voltage -- dc voltage regulators can create noise.  This is why the Oade M148 uses 8x 6volt SLAs in series to create a 48volt powersource to provide clean phantom power.

I use a 9v DVD battery. Lasts forever.

works great for PSP-3 too.
if you can find em, grab em...  it gets harder every day though.  9v DVD batteries are still my favorite battery for anything that needs 9v worth of power.

I love the DVD batteries and I have 5 of them still going strong.  I have used them to power both my R-44 and the V3 for YEARS.

Now that I know the PSP-2 runs on 5v I will see if I can find a USB to RS Adaptaplug for the PSP-2.  That way I can power the PSP-2 from the 5v USB and the Sonosax from the 12v DC out.  I giggle little at the potential for a single battery option for both pres.   :guitarist:

Are you sure that it only takes 500mA?  I just made a 5v USB cable using adaptaplug tip M, - on ring and + on tip.  I tested it with my multimeter and got 5v clean.  However it won't power up the PSP-2.  If I use the M tip and a 9v DVD battery it fires up fine.

I'm using the USB port on top of the Naztech 15000.

A lot of these USB batteries are 5V @ 1A - but some have a 2Amp output - maybe that works?

I fixed it.  It was my cable.

So is the PSP2 field powerable with a 5v USB battery? So WHEN I finally grab a PSP2[lol!], I can easily power both the PSP2 & 70D with the same 5v USB batteries? Talk about super easy powering solution! :coolguy:

Yeah, powering two things from one battery is awesome! I used to power both my DMIC20/D8, and then V3/D8 from a BP-50, and V3/JB3 from a bigger 12v SLA. Can't beat that kind of simplicity, as long as the batteries are decent and you have a couple of backups ;D Like I said above, I'd love to own a PSP2 one of these days, and its great to know that I can easily power it with some 5v USB batts 8) BTW, I'm always willing to trade my VMS02IB for a working PSP2 ;D

Hope it works out for you, rigpimp! Powering the Sax and PSP2 from that same Naztech will be killer!

It can be powered by a 5v USB battery. I use a phone charging battery that has 2 USB outputs to power the PSP2 and my PMD 661:

I've been able to power it with a 5v, 500mA battery

Yes, works great.  I can power the PSP-2 from the 5v USB out, and the Sonosax from the 12v out.  Run times still to be determined.

Thanks for the clarification, Ted :) That's KILLER that the best preamp ever[at least for Schoeps, IMO], is so easily powered! I would love the simplicity of running BOTH the PSP2/70D from the same 5v USB batteries! So who's got my PSP2? lol.

I have [6+] 5v/10,000mah USB batteries with dual USB OUTS, so I would already be set on batteries! Now I just need to find a PSP2 :P ;D

14-14.5 hours of recording with both pre's (48v on) on the Naztech and I crapped out for bed with 2 bars left on the battery.  All in all a solid festival solution!

I woke up this morning to turn it all on only to find the left channel on the PSP-2 just clicking (passing no sound).  I swapped batteries and threw 9v at it to see if it was voltage related and it is not.  It is not the capsule either as I swapped out the 2nd AK40 and it still clicks.

Are your cables OK?

If you isolate the issue to the PSP2, people have sent it to Vark Audio and he's repaired it.

I will troubleshoot more tonight.  I will flip around my active cables and then flip around my shorty XLR cables and see what happens.

Edit:  I came home and it ran fine.  I swapped cables around and it still worked fine.  I ran it for a few more hours and turned it all off.  This morning I fired it all up to run it all day again and it is running fine.  I'm still going to send it to Vark to repair the DC jack and have them look at it.

So even though both pres were clearly being "powered" noise was introduced likely from when the output voltage dropped to below specified voltage tolerance.  On my first test I calculated that I got 11.9 hours of clean sound running both a Sonosax and a PSP-2 off of the same Naztech 15000.  This EASILY carries me through a full two set rock concert as well as most of the way through recording every set of a festival day.

Great start but I will run more tests.  I mailed my CCM4's to SLC for a buddy to borrow for a couple of weeks.

I don't think I've ever noticed anything like this on the PSP2. I almost always have internal batteries in the PSP2 just in case there is some sort of flaw with the external battery, ie., the battery drains, accidental removal of cable, etc.

Do you run your tests with internal batteries? I would think if the voltage drops, then it would automatically switch to the internals.

Well, I could be wrong.  I would not be surprised if it is an issue with the Naztech.  Either way my PSP-2 will go to Vark for a once over.  I was testing it without the internals.

Vark told me there is an issue with mine running toward the lower end of the voltage range, i.e. 5v.

I had Ted hack off the V3 end from my dual DVD battery and put on a adaptaplug male end that I can switch to whatever plug floats my boat.  The blue M tips fits the PSP-2 perfectly.  I'll give the modified cable a whirl tonight for JJ Grey.  I am guessing that if one DVD battery lasts forever then two should last forever^2.   :P
