AT853 Omni's and Hypers vs 943 counterparts...
« on: March 24, 2009, 03:59:00 PM »
Ok I know I've asked a lot of questions about various 853 caps vs the 943s, but this one will be the last  ;D

A lot of people have given opinions on the 853 cards vs the 943 cards, but I haven't seen any posts about the omnis or hypers.

How do the Uniline (U853) caps compare with the 943s for these patterns?

Thanks

I can't speak to the 943's, but in the few times I've used the 853 hyper caps, I haven't been overly impressed. Granted, there could be all kinds of reasons other than the caps - too  far from the source, placement pattern not ideal, but in general I think the cardioids are far better, and the omni's are great if you've got the right location to use them.

All that said, one of the best recordings I've ever done was with one hyper cap and one cardioid cap - I was experimenting with something and recorded a show that way by mistake, and it sounded amazing. I think it was just dumb luck.

AT853 Hypers sound great to me when used in the proper circumstances. I've pulled some very good sounding recordings using them from the balcony at the Troc in Phila. (which is quite far from the stage). The hypers' bass is not supposed to be too good, but I guess I tend not to notice the bass that much unless it is extremely deficient.

I can't compare them, as I don't have the 853 omnis, but I like the 943 (or is it 933? - anyway, the CMC-8) omnis quite a bit.  You don't run into the same problems with the omni (predicatably) as you do with the smaller cards (i.e., lack of bass).
