Hanging mics from a balcony (down, not out)...?
« on: February 21, 2012, 06:54:47 PM »
hey guys, i'm wondering if something like this exists, and where to find it?

basically, i need to clamp to a balcony, but instead of going out horizontally to the floor, i need to go straight down.  so i'm hanging my mics from a balcony using a bogen extension to the clamp/balcony... anyone know how to rig this up?  it doesn't look like my windtech or superclamp will do...

yes!  that's what i need...  how did you rig this up?  the clamp you mentioned (Mannfrotto 649) appears to be similar to my supper clamp...  how did you get it to a right angle?

Myco has also done this from the rail at the Orpheum in Boston.  I'll try to direct him here...

the venue that i'm dealing with is a weird situation.  hard to explain here... lol

i need to clamp "c" facing down to the ground, then run an extension pole down to the ground as well...

Try the 042 at the top of the page or the 203 about 2/3 down. Either should work but there are some differences - the 042 will give you greater reach because it is longer than the 203 but it is hex-indexed so you have limited positional capability while the 203 is not indexed thereby allowing you unlimited positioning to attain true vertical.

< the 649 may be all you need if the jaw is wide enough (about 4" max) to clamp to the rail/floor/beam etc as it has a short extension built into the "back" of the clamp so no adapter spigot required, just 1/4" > whatever your extension pole has >

Super clamp > extension arm > extension pole

^This with either a superclamp or a 649. You can drop lower by daisy chaining 2 safety cables to get below the bottom of the balcony. Link to the Matthews pole:

Hi guys,

Here is what I use to clamp to the railing of the Orpheum theater in Boston. I clamp to the rail and hang the boom arm straight down. On occasion I've used an articualing arm to bring it out from the balcony wall, but sometimes I just extend down to just below the bottom edge of the balcony. The clamp is big & heavy, so as well as using a safety cable on the gear, I'll usually wrap some gaffer's tape around the clamp, and a few of the key connections just to be safe. If this were to ever fall onto someone from above it would probably kill them, so I play it extra safe.

Ted....What is the extension on the Nano Clamp>CK1x Active?

Looks like a vark bar base rod (black) and a home brew PVC piece that has 3/8" male threads on each side (grey)

I have to ask if any of you guys that have mics in the pictures ever experienced a 60Hz hum?  You're running mic cable right next to lighting fixtures that are most likely on a circuit with a dimmer.  It's a recipe for disaster with RFI.  If you have experienced any hum issues route cable as far away from the power cords of the lights and if you do have to go over them make sure you do it at a right angle and try to avoid any parallel cable runs.
