DR-680 Pre AMP
« on: August 15, 2014, 09:26:10 PM »
Recently just bought a Tascam Dr-680 .. Seems like a great rig. Ive always used non phantom mics Nakamichi cm300's. but I bought that new rig and along bought a superlux s502 requiring 48v Phantom... My question is with this dr 680 do I need a pre amp ???
Here's one I recorded last night and thanks in advance for any help

My buddy Dave usually will go without a preamp with his 48v mics and he's made some fine recordings.  I think the internal preamps are well respected.

No, you don't need a preamp (at least for the first 6 channels).  The onboard pres are perfectly adequate.  Doesn't mean you can't use outboard pres if you want, but that's more a matter of taste.  Also depends on how much gear you want to schlep around.  I use a USBPre2 for channels 7 and 8, but only when I really need 8 channels.

Same here. I usually leave the V3 at home, and just go with the DR-680's pre amps. Heck, even the pros at KEXP run it without a seperate pre amp.

As stated above it's really a matter of personal preference, I'm also of the opinion that the 680 preamps are "adequate" for me I don't find them great but only "adequate" so I carry an additional external preamp. It's a matter of performance for me & since I'm already carrying a large bag I might as well use an external preamp because I feel it performs better.
I know you like, tape for people's approval and stuff, and wave your tapes around like they're your dick...  but even you can't actually think section tapes from philips sound good.
