For reviews of lenses for Canon, look here: http://www.photozone.de/Reviews?PageSpeed=noscript and here: http://www.kenrockwell.com/canon/lenses/index.htm.
The Tamron SP AF 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II LD IF ($499) looks like optically good (sharp) lens, but it doesn't have IS (Image Stabilization), which is very meaningful in hand-held shots.
Another viable option is the Canon EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM ($249). It is also an optically good (sharp) lens and it has IS. However the minimum aperture is only between f/3.5-5.6. It also has FTM (Full Time Manual Focus), which is very useful.
For low light video shooting, the Tamron 17-50 has an edge.
For hand-held video shooting where there is enough light, the Canon 18-55 STM has an edge.
The Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM ($829) has the benefits of both the above ones.
Camera bodies are being upgraded every so often, while really good lenses are lifetime investments. If you can wait a little and gather the money for the Canon EF-S 17-55mm f/2.8 IS USM, IMAHO it will serve you well.

That makes me feel better about the shutter life. I've looked at the Tamron 17-50mm f2.8 as an option. Thoughts on it? My current budget could support up to about 650, 700 max. I appreciate all the comments on the bodies. You guys have probably saved me a lot of money!

I have a tamron 17-50 f2.8 and the focus is pretty slow and iffy sometimes but as long as your paying attention it's great. For video through in manual focus it would be awesome it's a gem of a lens. Look on digitalrev.com for it I got mine from there $250 brand new. Let me know if you want more info on it.

Thank you for the info on the Tamron. I usually always manual focus at concerts, but there are times when I know a lot of action is going to happen in a song and need that quick focus. The bands I shoot I'm very familiar with, so I'm  prepared for the shooting environments unless they change up their lighting. Thanks again, everyone for your thoughts and suggestions. I may rent some of those lenses and test out and see what I like the best.

I upgraded from a t3i to a Canon 70D last year. The difference shooting a concert in low lit nightclub is like night and day. Photo-wise, you can crank the ISO to 3200 or 4000 and get good looking images. On the t3i going passed 1600 is just garbage.

I have a Tamron 24-70 f/2.8, a Tamron 70-200mm f/2.8, and I'm waiting for the new Tamron 15-30mm f/2.8 on back order. All expensive lenses, but if you can afford them, they're well worth it. All have IS and all are a ton cheaper than the Canon equivalent.
I shoot concert video and post my footage to YouTube

I've seen your videos before, they're really great. You have some OLP that I'd love to talk to you about sometime.
