Help identify cause of static
« on: July 17, 2015, 09:15:44 AM »
Hi Folks, I was hoping someone could listen to the linked file and take a gander at what causes this static, which riddles the recording.

This was at the Word this week, Schoeps mk41v> nbob kcy> naiant pfa> Busman Mod dr70d @ 24/44.1 kHz.

My guess is a bad sd card. The card gave me write errors running 4 channel (the other rig was mk22> Vark kcy> Naiant pfa) at 24/96. So I backed it off to 44.1.

If it isn't the card, what might it be? It's too bad, because despite the static, is sounds fantastic!
Recording:
Capsules: Schoeps mk41v (x2), mk22 (x2), mk3 (x2), mk21 & mk8
Cables: 2x nbob KCY, 1 pair nbob actives, GAKables 10' & 20' 6-channel snakes, Darktrain 2 & 4 channel KCY and mini xlr extensions:
Preamps:    Schoeps VMS 02iub, Naiant IPA, Sound Devices Mixpre6 I
Recorders: Sound Devices Mixpre6 I, Sony PCM m10

Home Playback: Mac Mini> Mytek Brooklyn+> McIntosh MC162> Eminent Tech LFT-16; Musical Fidelity xCan v2> Hifiman HE-4XX / Beyerdynamic DT880

Office Playback: iMac> Grace m903> AKG k701 / Hifiman HE-400

Seems to be a few reports of this!!  I wonder if it likes SDXC cards better.  I haven't had a chance to run mine.  What type of card are you using??

Sandisc Ultra 32 gb, 30MB/s SDHC I

Does the static seem consistent with a card issue? I'm trying to replicate the issue now.

I had the same thing happen with a generic SDHC 32gig card. I have since moved to a PNY for the past few weeks and have not received the same issues.
I tested all pieces of gear in my chain with other decks and preamps. and could not get the same results. My findings it that is was the card and a write error.

Sorry you had this happen bro.

Yeah, I bought a PNY 64gig SDXC for mine, but haven't used it yet.  I plan on doing AUD & SBD this Tuesday for Golden gate Wingmen.  All these static recordings are making me nervous

At least one other person mentioned similar problems with that exact card.

Most people recommend SanDisk, but I have had a couple of their newer 64GB microSD cards go bad on me.

I use an older 16GB Transcend class 10 card in my 70D with no issues.

I had the same exact issue with the same exact card and reported it a little while back in the DR70D thread. I haven't been able to reproduce the issue with a Sandisk 8GB Class 4 MicroSDHC with adapter.

On a one should not assume anything note, perchance where were the cards purchased?  There are a lot of bogus cards out there...

I've exclusively used Sandisks (32 GB or less) since 2010 and have never had a card issue (so far anyway).  I am always careful to format pretty regularly, to only format in the recorder it is used in, and never to delete or remove anything from the card (except rarely in a space emergency in the recorder it is being used in).

I've used a few other cards from time to time without issue but now that I have large Sandisk cards avoid those.

I ran the rig 4 channels 24/96 for a while in front of the stereo this afternoon. Everything works perfectly with an old 16gb micro sd card in an adaptor as well as with an brand new 64gb pny sd. Go figure.

Thanks to all who responded. +t all around.
