DPA UA0896 Windscreen + Dead Muppet VS. BIG SHURE
« on: August 15, 2015, 02:44:11 AM »
I have some outdoor shows coming up and want to be prepared in case of windy conditions.

Does anyone know which will work better - The combination of the smaller DPA foam windscreens + dead muppets?

Or just the Big Ass Shures?

I also have the metal windscreens that came with the Nakamichi CM-300's - would a dead muppet over the metal windscreen be an effective wind block?

Which would have the least impact on the sound? (I'm assuming that all that material around the mic will "mute" the sound in some way…)

I'm open to other suggestions…. Mics I'll be using are Busman BSC-1 , Nak CM-300 , and probably Nak CM-700's too.

Thanks,

:-[ Jeez. I kept digging and found this thread http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=174011.0 which answers most of these questions - still curious if a dead muppet over the metal Nakamichi windscreen would be effective...

Dead muppet over a Nak metal screen would be only slightly better than a dead muppet by itself. The Nakamichi metal screen is more of a pop-screen to protect the mic from saliva that comes with plosives (t, p, b, etc.) and other sibilants ("s" and other hissing sounds) from vocalists and when used for recording speech. The one advantage to using a dead muppet over the metal screen is the metal screen provides a certain volumn of "dead" air around the capsule that a muppet alone does not provide. If you are starting from scratch, also consider the Rycote softies - very loose open foam around the mic (like a BAS) and a built in fur covering.

note; the above are my opinions based on my experience only and are not based on any scientific testing
