Shortening Schoeps K 5 LU (Lemo to XLR-3M) cables?
« on: March 01, 2016, 04:25:45 PM »
Hi Members,

I'm interested in slowly buying a set-up like this one as I can afford it.

Can any members please tell me if these K 5 LU adapter cables can be shortened?

They are made as 5 Metre long cables (196.85 inches / ~ 16.4 foot).

I'm after a few sets of these cables at:

48 inches (4 foot).

Is this possible for a cable expert to do without changing the audio quality or impacting on the powering of these CCM 41 units?

I would be running:

Schoeps CCM 41 > shortened K 5 LU cables > Roland R-26.

Powering the CCM 41's via the 48volt phantom power provided by the R-26.

I have no experience with Schoeps, but I would suggest contacting either your local authorized dealer or, perhaps, Schoeps directly. I wanted a pair of special DPA cables at a non-standard length, and I contacted DPA. They were very cool about it, and actually gave me a great deal, but made a distributor an intermediary. I would be surprised if you couldn't arrange something similar with Schoeps...

Thanks for your reply aaronji. I just emailed them through their website.

Did it take you long to receive your custom length DPA cables?

Eric -- not sure if you're aware that there are now some less expensive ways to achieve a similar setup using schoeps mk41 caps, kc5, kcy or followinbob (active on this board) active cables and a naiant pfa adaptor -- this will also give you a modular active setup that will work with any caps in the schoeps mk series.  The Naiant PFA converts 48 volt phantom power to meet the requirements of the schoeps capsules, the followinbob actives can be made with the cable length of your choice and there are a few folks on this board that can modify/shorten the schoeps kc5 or kcy active cables.

Thanks dnsnacks. You have given me something to think about. The idea of a modular setup is interesting.

Apart from the Mics themselves are the other cables and Naiant box easy to buy?

I have received an answer from Schoeps.

"it is very easy to shorten a K 5 LU to a "K 1,22 LU". Everybody who has ever soldered something will be able to do this. You may open the XLR plug just by unscrewing, no tools are required. Inside you find only two solder points, the shield is hold by the strain-relief. You can cut the cable at the desired length and mount it the same way again. You will not loose any audio quality by this.

If in doubt you may order the "K 1,22 LU" also at your national SCHOEPS dealer."

That solves that one.  I don't have any soldering experience so I will try and order one already made up from Schoeps.

You might want to contact Nick aka Schoepsnbox on here.  He should be able to help you out.

Eric:

Yes, you'd want to contact TS member followinbob about his cable solution (he's reverse engineered the schoeps kc6 active cable system) and TS member jon stoppable about his PFA solution.

I worked with ts member darktrain to get my modular schoeps active setup fully configured (he added some terminations to the schoeps kc5 active cables I bought to interface with the PFA adaptors I bought from jon stoppable/naiant.  Darktrain does nice work and, at a minimum, would be a good resource for shortening the ccm cables if you chose to go that route.

Thanks for your replies dnsnacks.  That darktrain rig looks amazing.  It's a bit out of my league at the moment though.  But it is incredible looking.  I'm a bit short on funds presently but I'm still doing a lot of research on Taper Section.

gotchya -- seems you'd be looking at another $2k-plus just to get a pair of CCM41s new, right?
