http://www.sonyalpharumors.com/a-first-real-sony-hack-removes-the-30min-video-recording-limit-and-unlocks-the-language-menu/

Confirmed working on the hx90v. It's still recording at the 1:25 mark and still going.

Would that not put the sensor at risk of damage from overheating?

I thought the main reason for the 30 minute limit was to "encourage" people to buy actual video cameras in addition to still cameras.

Do they really overheat? Can someone confirm??

I'd love to use my a6000 to shoot full shows.

Reading some of the comments at the link - sounds like some do and some don't...sounds like with certain models - people aren't getting 30 minutes to start with.

Unclear if it causes damage or just forces a shut down at a certain temp...

Sony cameras do have built-in temperature warnings, and will shut down if they get too hot (even without this hack, see recent reviews for the new a6300, lots of overheating issues with it). My old Sony NEX-5N would give me overheating warnings and shut down when I did too much consecutive video with it as well.

I'll run my hx90v for a longer duration and see if I can get a temperature warning/shutdown to occur. I'll plug it into a power source so it will record longer than the life of the battery. But I got about an hour and a half of continuous video out of it yesterday without any issues.

Update: I plugged my hx90v into an external USB battery pack and hit record. The results: It recorded until I ran out of space on my memory card (64gb). Almost 3 hours of continuous video recorded (2hr42min59sec to be exact). The camera didn't feel hot or anything like that.

enyone tried with a rx100m4 on 4k?

but i also found this interesting: modded firmware for the samsung Nx1 and NX500 - including removing video limit also. Sad the NX500 is discontinued but maybe i get an used one for this.

I know nothing about cameras or video, but a 30 minute video limit would surely suck for recording shows ;D This hack seems pretty cool! Is it a PITA to deal with such big audio/video files in post though, if you're removing the file size limit? Kind of like removing most audio recorders 2gb file size limit! But with audio, not many DAWs can handle files bigger than 2gb! So I'm wondering if the same applies to video? Once again, I'm a video n00b, so sorry if that's a silly question ;D

Speaking as someone who has authored somewhere in the neighborhood of 1500-2000 DVD/blu-ray discs of unofficial live music recordings - I think having the entire show as one continuous file is by far the easiest to work with; especially with modern recordings where the audio drift typically is very minimal.

HX9V doesn't show as an option. (Basically this is for cameras that run android) ... Let me know if you find a hack though...

Actually, I got rid of the HX9V several months ago (the card wouldn't stay seated and even after paying $70 to get it fixed, it would seat, but the camera wouldn't recognize it).  So I should have said HX50V.  I can't check until I get the USB cable that fits it, and that won't be until next week.

Ugg ... does not work for the HX50V.  I've since learned that it's not on the list of those cameras that run android.
