Anyone had a "no signal" problem?
« on: July 05, 2003, 03:04:49 AM »
I dont know what it is in my setup that isnt working right, at first I thought it was my battery but the pre's power shows that it is on.  Now I dont know what to think my recorder says no signal yet all my cables are plugged in right and they all seem to be working fine.  Im getting kinda scared that its my mics because I know one time I turned my pre on with the phamtom power switched on and then plugged the mics in after.  Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Forgot to add that I have had a scratch sound in some of the recording and then it shuts off and comes back on (all of the recorder and the pre shut off and came on).  But tonight it had a scratch sound then I unplugged the mics after turning the pre off and plugged them back in and I had a "no signal" displayed on my recorder.

my first thought would be to check the CO2... do you have access to a dat recorder? maybe even try running into a different md.

to check the mics set everything up and snap your fingers in front of them, or clap... you should see some kind of levels on the dmic.

ye I set the everything up and snapped my fingers, the levels jumped to the sound.  I dont have another recording device but ill try to see if one of my buddies do.  But the thing with the dmic and the power is that at red rocks 2 weeks ago the power would go in and out yet the battery had almost full power.  As for the C02 I have the 9v adapter you can get to power it and the red light(indicating power on) as on and the cable were plugged in.

hrmmm, sounds like a loose connection to the battery powering the dmic

I had a problem with an adc20 I bought from someone on the oade board. I was getting levels on the adc20 and my M1 was telling me no signal. The tech support at G.P. is awsome. They talked me through all kinds of tests and when we couldn't get it right- they overnighted me a replacement
-The moral of this story- call G.P. tech support

Hi Kevnm67 and All,

While I'm not sure what the problem is, some dealers do not order their ADC/DMIC-20's with the "consumer channel status" settings.  I don't know that the MD would be sensitive to this, but as a consumer device it may.  If your DMIC does not have a sticker on the bottom that says "consumer channel status," it may be sending "professional channel status" which contains no channel status (ie. SCMS) information and the receiving deck may default to "no signal" or "copy prohibit" (if it behaves the same way the D7/8's do).

If the problem seems to be intermittent power, try spreading the pins inside the DC input jack on the DMIC.  Be careful as these can break.  This is the same issue as quite a few folks have experienced with the V3.

I would not be too concerned that it you may have harmed your mics because the deck has no way of knowing what type of audio (noise, music, etc...) is supposed to be coming in and it will not descriminate.   Further, while it is a good idea to connect and disconnect mics with phantom off, it almost never harms anything, especially the mics.

As others stated, Graham-Patten support is some of the best in the audio world.

Keep us posted on how it goes.

Happy Recording,

Marc

Thanks for all the  help!
Marc I checked the bottom and it does say Consumer channel status.  I thought I posted something yesterday but I guess it didnt work, huh, but anyways I tried narrowing it down last night and I think what it was the battery powering the C02, I checked it with one battery tester and it said "good" then I tried an electronic one and it said it was producing 5.6 or something around there, which apparently isnt enough, so I replaced the 9v and what do you no I got a signal. But what I dont understand is the red light on the c02 indicating its being powered was on. Does anyone know how long the 9v adapter for the C02 will power it efficiently for?  Or any advice on the c02.
thanks again
Kevin
