New stealth mics question about placement
« on: August 16, 2003, 05:46:34 PM »
I'm going on my first stealth adventure to tape David Bromberg at the Mahaiwe theater in Great Barrington, MA. Should I stand right in the center up towards the front or should I stand off to the side in front of a stack while taping? I'm running DPA 4060>AD20>D8. I'm running them in my hat, should they point forward or outwards?

Peace and thanks!

Heya
Nice rig ;)
Try to point them at the speaker stacks if you can.
And where you stand all depens on the venue. I usually go for the "sweet spot" that you kinda have to visualize around the middle of the floor, not between the stacks.
And I don't recommend stack recordings at ALL, but that's just me!

Hey thanks for the speedy reply! So are saying to stand in the center and aim the mics out (like DIN) instead of straight forward?

It all depends on the venue and how the stage and PA are set up. My 4061s usually run straight forward on my glasses, but pointing them directly at the stacks I feel is better. If it looks like DIN or NOS, then cool, go for it. Just keep your head between the mics and you'll come out shinin' like a new dollar.

dpa4060's are omnis right?

Run them hrtf or baffled omnis;

You can run a small set of mics like that in the sweat band of a nylon mesh baseball cap. Make some slits at the rear  of the cap on either side where the sweat band begins, and fish the mics to a point over either ear.... HRTF

Come on Armen, you're slacking man! You missed this one

No way, dude; I was right on the money for his question... ;)

Awesome! Thanks! Unfortunately my head is so damned big I had to custom order a hat to fit so I'm stuck with a crushable suede outback hat to monkey with when it gets here! So I see now the mics are pointing upwards instead of straight out, cool!

WHOA! That must be one bitchin' taping hat.
If at ALL possible, wear the mics around your ears. You need your head as a baffle with omnis that close together...

Just above your ears or up near your temples a smidge...

When I have used the 406x mics, this is what i do.

I tie the mic cable in a standard loop (like the first knot when you tie your shoes), and then put my ear through the loop.  Leave enough "slack" on the mic end so that they stick out like antena.  You can pull the long end and tighten them around your ears.  they wont move, and you'll end up with a perfect HRTF setup.
the recording will come out AWESOME.
Hopefully, you dont have a crew cut.

When you start a cover band who says Styx?

They say ostrich has less fat, but you eat more of it
