FM bleed on h120 recording or no? (that's a no)
« on: October 27, 2006, 06:10:07 PM »
To be completely honest I do not remember this coming through the PA at the show but I don't see why it would have unless the band decided to throw a random spanish radio sample/affect in there. I had read a post in the iRiver team thread about someone experiencing a FM bleed into one of their recent h120 recordings. I'm not trying to alarm people but I thought we could try to figure this issue out. Any ideas?

Name: FM Bleed.flac
Size: 3MB
Description: h120 FM Bleed?

The download link is: http://www.sendspace.com/file/hlbnnm

Separate issue but same recording. Two "pops" in the same song but no other signs of this in the recording. I've heard this would happen on NJB3 recordings and that a HDD format would fix the problem. Perhaps not the h120 but maybe something cable wise...

Name: weird pop1.wav
Size: 2MB
The download link is: http://www.sendspace.com/file/zcyywq

Name: weird pop2.wav
Size: 1MB
The download link is: http://www.sendspace.com/file/qfg69y

Other information...for the first few recordings I did on the h120 I would just cut/paste them straight from the unit to my pc. However, I recently left a few recordings on there that were present on the HDD for this show. I don't see why having stuff on there would cause any of this, I'm sure a million people leave recordings on there without problems. I also haven't been using rockbox to delete files from the  h120 which is something that I am going to start doing.

Any input is greatly appreciated!

John

Edit: are these the pops that people have heard on recordings from "cluttered" NJB3 and or h120 HDDs?

yeah I'm probably paranoid, I just thought it was weird and out of place. I had a few beers but wasn't out of it, I just don't remember this happening at the show...

it could have easily been a grounding problem with a guitar cable, a pedal, or even a bad microphone cable acting as an "antenna" for picking up strange radio frequencies. Happens all the time, although I've never heard it that clearly before, especially at a show.

Well I might feel a bit silly right now but at least I'll be honest about it. I reached the band's "tour manager" online and asked him if this was a sample or if my recorder was freaking out...

"haha yeah kelsey has that on his loop station"

I still hope this talk of FM bleeds doesn't become more prevalent...

well that's good to hear.  however, that sample is really out of place, even if the band was trying to use it for musical effect, it should have been timed better or something.

I think more people should test for Fm bleed by doing the following: tune into your strongest FM station in your area, then go to recording screen, record line-in with no mics plugged in, and crank the H120 gain to the max and listen... Then tell us if you hear the radio...
