Ghetto riggin'
« on: October 18, 2003, 12:17:17 AM »
I'm trying to put a 2nd rig together using a small amount of cash. A rig to throw around, let friends borrow, etc... Looking for suggestions on best bang for the bizuck.

Right now it looks like ua5 (250 do digimod myself) + njb3 20gb (200ish). Mics are where to spend the most cash, should I hold out for a pair of used mbhos/184s/at405x's  or do I go for a new pair of octava or adks?

Suggestions on all parts, cables, shockmounts, stands, on the cheap but still quality construction are all greatly appreciated.

if you have the cash i'd say go with the mics you specified, as i am an at4051a user, i am biased towards them and i love there warm sound, especially the highs, super crisp, and you can always run the mics especially if they are Higher quality with your #1 rig

ADK Tl's are a fine choice, nothing wrong with MBHO's either, but I wouldn't really call this a ghetto rig
It is company policy never to imply ownership in the event of a dildo - We have to use the indefinite article; "A" dildo, never: "YOUR" dildo.
In Tyler we Trust

And isn't sanity really just a one-trick pony anyway? I mean all you get is one trick, rational thinking, but when you're good and crazy, ooh ooh ooh, the sky is the limit!

cpclark -- I really like the sound of the ATs, must underrated mics imho, way below the radar. But new they are kinda pricey and I never seem them come up on ebay. Did you get yours used?

How can someone NOT love the ua5>njb3 combo?!? A killer pre/ad AND hard drive recorder for under $500. If the V3 gets that optical mod, the M1 is going out the window.

i must agree here, the audio technica mics are well under the radar, only seen two or three tapers using these currently and they smoke, i luckily found a demo pair from and A/V shop up in massachusetts on ebay for 550, super sick deal, but you can usually find new ones on ebay, only singles though, but way cheaper than the $700 retail

this is certanly no ghetto rig!

anyway, i'll throw another vote for the ADK TL's , sound great and they have them nifty switchable polar patterns and shocks to sweeten the deal.
ADK A-51s LE's > Oade W-mod UA-5 > Zoom H4n Pro if I bother to drag out a full rig. More often just the H4N Pro. My LMA tapes

Glad to know my hard earned dollars and time went to buy a "ghetto rig"!?! (ADK>UA5>NJ3).  Hahaha...

Oh well, so far the UA5>NJ3 is working great...

And "hear hear" on the HD recorder part...  And it does data too, I brought home a bunch of SHNs from a friend on it a few days ago...
