I did. My first stealth mic.

It's a great mic. Hard to beat at that pricepoint.
I also like the switchable caps. The ca-11 omnis sound nice as well.

Not a fan of the CA-11's, but the CA-14's are a wonderful stealth mic and I recommend the cardioids often for stealth recording.  I understand that Chris is coming out with something new, but they are expected to be slightly larger than the 14's.

I was just kidding. It was my good-natured way of saying that I can find threads on TS going back 10 years about the Ca-11. I would think it’s pretty much the same mic now, although only Chris knows the details...

Very neutral sounding compared to the Ca-14 — in fact the first time I used an 11 after a few years of recording with the 14, I was very disappointing at what I felt was a lackluster sound. However, after listening to it a few times, I realized that it wasn’t lackluster, it just was truer to the actual sound in the environment I was taping. The 14’s have a fuller, warmer sound (especially the Omni) but if you’re looking for a cleaner, leaner, more accurate (these are all subjective of course) recording and you’re going to EQ in post anyway, the CA11 is a great microphone, especially for the price on yard sale section or the occasional sale by Chris.

Compared to the CA14, it has capsules so you can change from Omni to cardioid. It used to come standard with an attached clip, but to my knowledge it no longer does (although Chris will make it for you that way if you ask). He supplies an external “slip-on” clip for each mic.

Definitely check out the thread in the Retail Space regarding build times if you want a spectrum of people’s retail experience with Chris.

The cables are very thin and the mic should be treated with more care than I like to. I have had a few pairs which have lost a channel — but I bet this is probably easily repaired.

Jersey guy, there are countless threads and comments on TS about these mics, plus almost every day there is a recording using them uploaded to either the Live Music Archive or a torrent site such as Traders Den or Dimeadozen.

Chris is having a sale at the moment; I believe it is two pairs of mics (CA11s, CA14s, or one of each) plus an “ugly” preamp (or the 9200 preamp), for $249 — which is good deal:

Take care and good luck with recording!

I adore my CA-14s. here's the first recording (https://archive.org/details/tmg2018-05-27) I captured with them clipped to my shoulders- and here's a matrix (https://archive.org/details/tmg2018-09-14) I captured by utilizing the 4channel recording of a zoom h4n pro and getting a feed from the mixer via XLRs and the CA-14s via the mic in. The CA-14s are actually higher in the mix, here. Crazy bang for your buck & highly portable. Great entry level mics- wish I would have picked them up a year ago.

I had a similar experience to a poster above- I picked up some CA-11s & found myself disappointed with them, but it's mostly just because I got used to the less-flat CA-14s. You'll likely be happy with what you get either way.

I used my CA 11 cards lately at an open air concert...as a backup mic and to improve the camera sound...I was surprised how good they sounded...used the same spot with the AKG CK 61 2 weeks before and was disappointed....

but sound coming out of an PA, seems to be pending on the band, music style, sound guy, etc., maybe that the CA 11 let the recording shine since I was the best match for the sound that day.

Thanks all for the advice. Went with the CA-11's and the Ugly Battery Box. 1st show Oct. 13th. We'll see how it goes.

I'll never ignore an opportunity to say I love my CA11s. Use the omni almost exclusively as my stealth mic these days

Omni or cards? Have fun with it. Will you be putting thought into your positioning, or just clipping them to ya to get a recording no matter where you stand? Or will you try to set them up somewhere?

Love2tape brings up important issues which are not always at the forefront when questions are asked about a particular small able-to-hidden microphone, which aren’t relevant to a big LDC mic like an AKG c414. How these mics will be used is as important a variable as what mic is being used.

Going with the cardioids and the croakies option. I have seats for 2 shows within the first 10 rows.

I'm also very tall, so the croakies option should work out well.

If you are not a head-bobber or talker or head-turner, that should turn out great.

I find myself using my CA-11 Omni's > CA-14 Cards Lately. I just love their full bass response.

Check out this pull from Delfest last year. So happy with how this one came out.

^Great tape!

I agree. The ca-11 omnis are really nice.
