i'm dyin' trying to build and external power source for my deck, and need to enlist the help of the experts.

My source is a 6v 5amp SLA.
my requirements are 5v 2amp currrent. any less voltage or current and it will not power up.

previous recomendations included the use of this: LM7805 voltage regulator , which will not work because it only outputs 1amp for current.

many other diodes i've looked at also have this limited rating.
I've got some rectifier diodes to try that will drop the current by 1v and have a 2.5amp current flow. that should work, but i'm not sure. the new SLA when fully charged is more like 6.5v, so the output w/one of these is still a little hot.
I need to speak with Doug. He recomended using RS diodes part number 4002, but I couldnt find any where I checked. So i need to look elswhere. I will try another RS today.

wondering if there is anyone out here in taperland that has successfuly constructed something?

You should not need anything like 2 amps of current to run the 660. That's over 10 watts of power!

The 6 volt SLA doesn't sound like a sure bet either, since the 660 may expect 5 volt steady input, and SLA's taper off considerably as they discharge. You may be better off making a NiMH pack with four C (5AH) or D (10AH) cells. Those have steadier voltage.

If you do it, post about it. I thought of doing that when I first got my 660, but I found that runtime is acceptable using 2500 mah internal AA NiMH cells (7+ hours). So I haven't bothered with an external pack. I'd like to be able to record more than 7 hours but also feel likely to sell my 660 when the R09 is out, so I may never get around to a 660 pack.

the 2amp requirement is what the Marantz AC/DC converter puts out. My unit was malfunctioning, so I can't comment on it working with any less current. Mine wouldnt, but then again....it was not functioning at full capacity.

no need for an external sled at all, but if you were to build one a 5ah 6v SLA...IMO, would run it the longest. Not only do you have all that stored energy in 5ah, but you have a long run time before the voltage would run down below 5v w/that.

Doug said the DC input guts could easily handle the 6v input from SLA w/o damaging or shortening the life of the product. Thats as good as gold to me.

Why not just get a Juicebox (2amp 5v) from Todd R and hook a Walmart 9v to it? I believe he makes these now. Game over.

What is the verdict on this powering solution. Can one use a ecocharge 6V SLA successfully? with the 660 and has anyone actually done it? I have actually been thinking about getting a 660, but I will only do it if I can use my BP50 eco's......

I think Oade said that would work... not sure if anyone has tried it yet though.

but...why ?
7 hours w/AA batteries. who needs to cart lead around?

'Zactly... I just picked up 4 Sets of 2500 mah NiMH batteries which will be overkill.

depnds on how much juice you need.
the easy way....pick a 6v RC pack and charger. that should do it fine.
or a 4 cell sled of any size.

excellent battery. I have one too.

however, for small and cheap and effective...
1. good NiMH cells will run it better than 4 hours
2. Energizer e2 lithiums will run it for close to 6 hours

How long does it power your 660? I think I did my calculation right on that power runner and it puts out 36Watt Hours. 5Vx7.2Ah=36Watt Hours. I think I am going with the one I posted above, b/c for $5 more you get 44 Watt Hours and it charges in half the time. It says 3-4 hours for max charging and it does not have to be discharged. I have been running duracell 2600 mA rechargeables with a LaCrosse charger and that seems to work well, but since I am planning on going to festivals this summer, I wanted to have a power cell that can run almost all day. Can't wait to get it in.
