Doug still mods these, but which mod if any would work best with a V2 or are these mods mostly for those who plug mics directly into the unit. Seems like most of the mods are in the mic in section. I will only be using the line in.

The Mods work for Line/Mic. Make sure you confirm that before you spend the money, but I'm pretty sure that's right.
You want to start with a concert mod. best thing ever.
If you are running a specific mic that wants the warm mod, that might be an option, but the concert mod will take whatever you throw at it and make you happy.

I have three warm modded 620s and love them. Unlike the 661 mods, he does also upgrade the line input.

The 661 is line and mic input, too, isn’t it?
I’m sure it is!

On the PMD661:
Mic/Line-In on the XLR's are MOD.
1/8" Line-In 2 is not.
I think.

Exactly!
The little 1/8 inch line in is the only thing not modified. I don't think I've ever used that!

I've never used the 1/8" either.. but if I remember correctly, that is D. Oade's preferred input. Stock.
If it's not his preferred input, he thinks highly of it.
Kinda crazy.

Yeah he likes it, if I ever run line in again I’ll try it.

Just looking back at this thread that kinda got sidetracked. So some of these mods address the line input? Which ones and are they worth $200? I’ll be using an external pre and looking for the best AD conversion possible out of this little bugger.

Whats wrong with the 620 stock version?
-
I love the stock model but I have an extra that I recently sent in for the concert mod — it’s currently in transit. Perhaps placebo but I thought it would be worth a try!
Here is the info on the mods: https://www.oade.com/digital_recorders/hard_disc_recorders/PMD-620MODS.html
And here’s the description on the mod most suited for our purposes, to save you a click:
The PMD 620MKII Concert rebuilds the PMD 620MKII mic preamp with a low noise, very low distortion and high slew rate op amp that dramatically enhances detail and clarity while lowering noise and audible distortions. This upgrade also improves the line input circuit. The built in mics are removed to maximize microphone input quality, all other features remain intact. Concert MOD parts are selected by ear to optimize the PMD 620MKII for recording music.
(According to this, it appears that the line-in is indeed modified… I always use mic-in so I don’t know too much about that!)

Doug verified for me when we were emailing back and forth, that he does indeed mod the line input on the 620, not on the 661. He designed the 661 mod specifically for folks who don't run an outboard pre and run xlr in. Someone asked about PIP, looks like that is intact, but I would get in touch with Doug if that matters.
I have never listened to the stock model, but over the years I've run an m148, two or three warm mod sbm1s, two warm mod 661s, to my ears his warm mods are exactly what I want-warm but detailed. I loved the mod when I ran 4022s, and even more with 4v/41v.
