Title: Battery Box for AT 853 mics
Post by: pwig on December 23, 2017, 09:35:05 PM
I am in need of battery box options for a set of Audio Technica 853 microphones. I would prefer something with a mini xlr input or output. Thank you for your help!

AT8531 power modules if you're not trying to 007

those are only made in single channel, right?
i do not do low-pro often but would like to have a stereo batt box that I could use for both sets of mics if possible. i believe the akg ck97s are 12v so I do not know if it is even possible to have one box for both sets of mics to use interchangeably. i am not very smart when it comes to things like powering mics beyond using standard phantom power. i actually thought the ck97s were phantom powered, hence why i bought them to try out. but i only have a tascam dr-70d which i cannot use to power hem with the equipment i have now.

Yes you would need two of the power modules.

I've got a 70; I think you can change the phantom; not sure if it's 12 or 24v.

ya i didn't wanna screw up the mic but connecting it and trying to run it with my normal settings. i have never adjusted the voltage on the 70 but i remember going through the menus and seeing the option. I'll give it a go tonight when I get home from work.

That beign said, I would still like to have a small, compact battery operated powering solution for those times when i would need to run as low-pro as possible

I have one of these with the built in "4.7k" mod which I run into a church ugly battery box, which is powered by a 9 volt battery. The output is too hot for the mic in on my M10, so I go line in and pretty much have to crank the gain wide open unless it's an extremely loud show. May be different on a different recorder with less sensitive preamps.  Those are mini-xlr connectors.

You can't get much smaller than that.

Additionally, I have one of these - It's a 20db attenuator cable I got from Core Sound back in my minidisk days. Next time I do a 007 job, I'm going to place it in between the battery box and the M10 and if my thinking is correct, it should knock the signal down enough to use the mic in input.

For open taping, I always have and always will use the power modules. They just work, and work well, sound great, don't take up that much room and run forever on a AA battery. I took the belt clips off and have them bound together with a velcro strap with a piece of thin foam between them. About the size of a couple of packs of smokes. And they work great with the M10's mic in input.

I'd love to see some responses from other M10 owners on what they do when running a similar setup.

JiB97, I just checked the phantom voltage on the DR70 - it's 48 or 24. I would think 24 would fry the AT853's.

when i power the 853s with the DR-70D i have been using the AT8538 phantom modules.

been thinking of downsizing that rig just for fun, hence the ISO of a batt box.

but i like your ideas about that adapter cable and then the church ugly box. pretty tiny.

Chris Church has made some pretty neat preamps over the years - one version of the CA-9100 has two mini-XLR in, 1/8" out.

I normally run it about halfway for rock, and turned up close to full for acoustic or quieter venues.

He even promised to make a fresh batch based on the CA-9200 a while back, but I don't think anything came of it:

There's a pic of my preamp on that thread.

This is my exact setup, and I would highly recommend it for low profile. However, my experience with CA-14s > UBB or AT-853s > UBB > DR-2D is that even the mic input at 100 still has levels a little lower than I would like. I'm curious what mics you are using, must be something with higher sensitivity than my mics. I guess I didn't realize the M10 had such a high sensitivity as well.

It has to be the M10. Even with the mic sensitivity switch set to low, anything powerd with a 9v overloads the mic input. Power modules>mic input= :headphones:

Even mics with the 4.7k mod? I have run both CA-14 cards and AT-853s, each with the mod, into an M10 mic-in with a battery box, and only at the loudest shows have they overloaded.

Maybe something like this?

Maybe I need to try again. That cable I have that goes from 2X mini xlr>1/8" does have the 4.7 mod. I swear I think it still overloads

On a related note (and I hope I am not highjacking this topic to too great a degree) but has anybody noted whether 4.7 modded AT853(u) cards are much more sensitive than 4.7 modded CA-14 cards?  I have sets of each and the CA-14s seem far less sensitive than the AT853s (to the tune of 15 dbs) when both are used with Church 9200 pres and M-10s (line in).  Sorry again for the stray thought.

Thanks! I posted first on the one thread and then decided to delete it there and post it to a more appropriate thread.  You were too fast for me -- thanks for the answer!
