Kirkland Batteries are the Bomb! Spyder, comprende?
« on: June 04, 2008, 08:39:50 PM »
Rob R in michigan told me about them several years ago. I was at Jeff Frank's in Chicago a few years ago and saw he bought some at Costco. I borrowed 4 to run my d8 as a backup. After an entire 2 set show, they still showed 4 bars on my deck! I was a believer.

On Saturday, i told Spyder Dan about them. Well, Sunday, a youngster that was patched out of me in Albany at Panic in April, asked for a patch from me. No problem. He went to change his batteries later in the day, and lo and behold, he had Kirklands! I had him tell Spyder about them so Dan would not think I was making up my story. he then gave Dan a 4 pack to try out.

Well Dan????????? What is the verdict?

Well, I converted a Duracell user this weekend at Phish. John M, who has taped probably 450-500 Phish shows, used Duracells. He went to Costco with his wife and I told him to bu a 48 pack of Kirkland AA'a. He used them for NYE Phish. After almost 4 hours and 3 sets, he had 2 bars remaining on his Tascam. He normally would have 1 bar after a 2 set show. John will ALWAYS BUY kIRKLANDS NOW!!!!!!!

I always had good luck and good prices with Rat Shack AA's. How do they do compared to the Kirklands?

I find the rat shack AA's have a short life.

PS.  The Earth called.  She is filling up with your dead batteries and would like you to buy a charger.  I mean, this isn't like 9volt batteries - AA's are easy.  And it isn't like a mountain top with no ability to charge...

I only use AA for my flashlight. All my other batteries are rechargable Bean. Kirkland's outlast ANY battery. Run a test and see for yourself!

Might take you up on that. There is NOT a Costco around me tho :( I use rechargeables in my flashlights as well ;)

All I can say is that I taped with Kirklands and they didn't suck.   :coolguy:

Good flashlights operate really well on rechargeable batteries.  That's because they have regulators to compensate for the voltage drop as the battery discharges, providing a consistent amount of light.  Most cheap flashlights lack regulators, and the light output rapidly drops.

I misplaced my tiny Fenix LD01 flashlight for two years. I was bummed because it is a $40 flashlight and I really needed it in the field (Alaska).  It is powered by a single AAA battery and it had a freshly charged NiMH energizer.  I was really happy to find it.. but then I assumed the dead battery had leaked.  I twisted it on, and it worked great.  The brightness was really surprising.  I measured the battery with a DVM at 1.09 volts.  I consider a 1.09 volt NiMH to be toast, but the regulator in the flashlight still drove the LED well.

I'm trying to earn back some alkaline battery karma points ;)

Please stop killing the earth and get rechargable batteries. There is almost no reason to run standard alkalines anymore, especially for AA batts. If you needed 9v's, I might understand, but AA's are so well done as the rechargables.

As far as leakage is concerned, it's a problem with all Alkaline type batteries. It's not so much a matter of if, but when and I would assume that off-brand batteries are more likely to leak sooner, especially the really cheap variants.

Agreed...  The only device in which I continue to use normal AAs is my mini mag-lite, if only because the rechargeables I own now are too large in diameter to fit...

Radio Shack used to make a 8 AA battery charger that was awesome...  Not sure if they still stock them...

Terry

ETA:  The new version of the battery charger comes with a 12vDC cigarette lighter plug!  Of course, the reviews make it out to be a POS...

It's a matter of charge; as an alkaline cell discharges, the negative electrode (the zinc can) gets thinner, until it eventually perforates. One more reason to pull out the batteries if you aren't going to use your gear for an extended period. A friend of mine lost her LS-10 due to this. The more the batteries are discharged, the less time you have before they leak.
