If the source is balanced and low impedance and the receiving unit has a balanced input, and you have a reasonable quality, properly assembled cable, then yes.

would running from a cd player > mixer > powered speakers count
how about 1/4 instead of xlr

does your CD player/mixer have balanced out and the speakers balanced in? (whether 1/4" or XLR doesn't matter so much since both can be balanced)

I helps if you have the needed amplification (microphone preamp) nearest to the mics.  And run the line level signal over the distance.  But I guess it depends on what qualifies as loss of quality.  A long cable will likely have a higher impedance which might affect some mics more than others.
