Schoeps VMS02IB questions
« on: February 25, 2012, 05:30:44 PM »
My VMS02IB has a 20db and 40db gain setting, but a friend of mine has a VMS02IB with 20db, 30db, and 40db.  Anyone know when they added the 30db setting and which one would be older/newer?  TIA

just a expensive phantom box IMO.  sold my last one here ( stu stu oh ya! ) grabbed it.  lack of metering, no left / right control, no fine gain adjustment.  the kcy input was the cool thing if u used it.  with the diff options for actives, i see u selling this before summer.  good luck on the info search, shouldnt be too hard to find the info u want.     ed

20, 30, 40 db of gain is what I'm familiar with.
In that sales thread for your VMS, the seller does call the unit a VMS 02.
Could that be a predecessor of the 02IB??...  or just an abbreviated exclusion??...  just a thought.
For PA shows, I pretty much just use the 20db gain.  30db of gain gets my red overload light poppin occassionally.  I've never used 40 db.

That silver sticker on the bottom should have a serial and model number....  but it looks like yours might be rubbed clean from the looks of the photo.  I bet our local Schoeps guru might be able to help if he was aware of this thread.

It is a VMSO2IB and this is the email I got from Bernhard at Scheops!

Hello John,

in the beginning the VMS01IB had only the 20/40dB switch. The later series had the 3 gain steps. Which of your preamps is newer depends on its serial number. As many VMS02Ib have got the 30db gain step as an upgrade it may be possible that your 20/40dB model still is the younger one. In the meantime this upgrade is not available anymore.

Kind regards,

I like variable gain on each channel and clipping lights/power lights

I guess I just don't get it.  My caps are matched.  Even if they aren't, I'm not going to try and correct for it in the field.  I think having to keep gain pots at the same setting in the field is a burden - it is the single greatest threat for a channel imbalance in my rig.  Give me one stepped gain pot.   I suppose the exception is MS or figure 8.

And for clipping indication, I have my recorder.  All the lights on my v3 are covered.  My aerco and psp2 don't have either problem.

I agree w/r/t variable gain. I've never found it useful when recording concerts and it's probably more of a hazard if anything. Your goal in the field should not be to match L and R peaks because you will never, in a million years, be in the spot of the room where peak L and R levels are equivalent. You get better channel matching through fixed gain and those kinds of adjustments can be made carefully in post without penalty.

Anyone know if all of the VMS boxes have the exact same battery tray? I would suspect that they would, but just wanted to be sure.

Thanks,
Bean

I did research on this the other night. The Schoeps VMS02ib AND VMS52ub have the exact same battery tray ;) The VMS32ub is 12v, so it has a different battery tray, and the only other Schoeps preamp ever made was the newer VMS5u, that I think is still for sale new, for a whopping $2,500 ;D 8) And the VMS5u is a combination of a VMS02ib and a VMS52ub, thats why it has a KCY input AND XLR inputs ;) Because the VMS52ub was strictly a BNC>XLR preamp, while the VMS02ib is strictly a KCY input ONLY preamp. The VMS02ib has separate outputs for M/S and regular Left/Right outputs, so that you can't get them confused ;)

It sucks there aren't replacement battery sleds available. Trust me, I've searched. If you have one that's usable, I recommend using it only if absolutely necessary (stealthing or you really need the free space in your bag) because they're nowhere to be found and they give out eventually. :( The VMS02IB will last damn near forever with a DVD battery though.

I know, right? I mean I understand that its been discontinued for many years now, but would it really have hurt Schoeps if they bought extra and had ANY in stock?!?!?! :( But whatever. Its not like its a deal breaker. I just don't like using rechargeable Lithium batteries as my main power source. I mean, part of the alore of the vms02ib for me was it being able to be powered with rechargeable AAs. Since I have a kickass Powerex/Maha AA/AAA charger, I would MUCH rather use rechargeable AAs on the internal of the vms02ib :) Plus, buying the correct DC connector for the vms02ib is $20 through Redding Audio, plus buying a DVD/Lithium external battery is added money I don't have right now. So it looks like I'll be running the internal AAs for the time being ;) That will give me some time to buy that special DC connector for the vms02ib through Redding Audio for $20, and I can start to build an RC battery NIMH setup like I used to have for my old SD 722 back in the day. Because I trust rechargeable NIMH batteries WAY MORE than rechargeable Lithium batteries. So I will definitely have an NIMH battery setup for the vms02ib for festies, and just use the internal AAs for indoor shows and non-festie shows :)

Thanks a LOT for the info Stu ;) ;D 8)

Thankfully, I have something in the works to at least have [1] EXTRA 02ib battery tray, so hopefully that works out and I do indeed get that [1] extra 02ib battery tray ;) ;D 8)

Mine is serial number 190, and only has the 20/40db gain settings, so looks like its going to stay on the 20db setting :)
