Nak 300 mod discussion - looking for advice...
« on: July 27, 2016, 11:39:12 PM »
I know I am going to get people that chastise me for modifying these mics, but I have serious question.

I have a set of 3, each with CP1, CP2 and CP4 caps.
hat
I am going to have (2) of them modded to run off of p48v.  I haven't decided if I will sell the other or keep it.  I want to keep it to be able to experiment around and run various 3 mic setups (cp4/cp2, split omnis, etc..) into my R44.  basically mess round wile my gefell rig is running my "keeper" tape.

here is the question:  if I have 2 modded for 48v, and keep one original and run it off batteries, how different are they going to sound?  I would imagine that one will have a very different noise floor but how much will that really come into play at a loud outdoor show (phish/cheese, etc....)  what other changes could I expect?

thoughts?  opinions?

Thanks!

Steve

I've had a set of JBMod Phantom Power Nak Clones (Teac ME80's)...if that is the route you are going the mod provides 6db of gain over the stock battery power version...hmm never did a head to head with my Nak CM100's but I recall it sounding nice...here is one

Yeah, the extra gain with the JB-mod is why I prefer this type of mod.....shorter, too.

Here's 3 shows I recorded with JB modded Nak 300's.  Recorded with a Sony M10, but used a different preamp for each occasion, Shure FP24, Aerco MP-2, or the Naiant Tinybox.

Dig it!   ;D
