Zoom H4, H5 or H6

(1/1)

awmeyertimmy:
Hey everyone.

I'm looking to upgrade my current setup.  I'm currently going XLR > Roland UA-5 w/Oade warm mod > MiniDisc (via Optical).  I am really interested in getting a preamp/ad/recorder all-in-one.  The Zoom H4, 5, and 6 are all models that look interesting and pretty affordable.  Has anyone used these and can offer any insight?  Also, I'd be open to any other suggestions for preamp/ad/recorder all-in-one's under $500.  It has to have at least 2 XLR input.

Thanks guys!

You can probably find a good used Zoom F4 for $500 or less.

If you're not dead-set on a Zoom, there's also the Tascam recorders to consider (680mkii, 60D, 70D, 701D)...I think you could get any of those for $500 or less (if nothing else, you could go the used route).

There are several very affordable Tascam DR60d four channel recorders in the Yard Sale right now. Going rate seems to be ~$120 used. I've been using one for several years and it's a good deck. 2 XLR inputs with decent onboard preamps and a 1/8th inch stereo line in for channels 3/4. Runs a long time on a 5V USB battery.

The 701D in the YS looks mighty good too, and is under the $500 budget.
