Any clue what is going on with this waveform?

just transferred a DAT master from 19 years ago. levels were running hot so i remember adjusting them down a little bit, but this looks strange for that action.

any idea what is happening here?  after the adjustment, the amplitude seems to be locked in a very tight range.

for the record, it was sonic studio mics and a sony tcd-d100.

thanks.

Ronmac:
Have you tried normalizing the reduced waveform section to see if it looks the same?

Gutbucket:
Looks like a limiter was switched in along with the gain adjustment.

i did. if i recall, i wasn't seeing the same form as prior the level adjustment.  i will look at it again.

interesting. i think i had those switches locked with tape so i wouldn't mess with them.  plus, i used to run line in.  not sure if they would apply??
