new Audix Micros - M1245
« on: April 19, 2003, 04:21:42 PM »
I'm continuing my hunt for the cardioid mics that will complete my lo-pro rig setup. I'm really liking the size of the M1245 and the cardioid pattern. I'm not good with the tech info though...

anyone out there care to take a look at the specs and translate (pretty good, ok, great, not as good as X but better than Y, etc)

price range is doable too...

The 1290 has a better bass spec. I would go that way.
40hz. is a decently low bass response.
You want the bass #'s (hz) to go as close to 0hz as possible, and the 1290's are better than the others, the1245's, in that sense.
The human ear attenuates bass starting at about 38 hz. The better caliber mics commonly go to 20hz, and some claim to go lower.

Keep in mind that cards lose bass response when you turn them off axis.
The other set 1245's shows 80 hz > 20khz (khz=highs), so I'd be afraid of getting a tinny / treble heavy recording going that route.
Other than the frequency response the specs are the same.

Hope this helps.

Peace
Mike

you cant really say a "better" mic goes down in bass response.....i own 480's and they have a 20-20k freq. response. the mic body also is said to have an extended freq. of 10-30k...typically, people say that they have too much bass....the schoeps and b+k's have a 40-20k response.... i LOVE my 480's but, indoors i typically like a LITTLE less bass, not all the time, but sometimes.....now outdoors, you can HEAR that extended freq. response come alive.....

anyway, back to your question, i've been eyeing up the 3.5" ones myself....they have the LOWS that i sometimes do not need...hope this helps......

mike,
i am not totally right....just depends on what you like....i've been running my 480's for four years now and i am just getting spoiled.....i also try to keep a broad freq. range to catch all those yummy lows... ;D one last note, i personally wouldnt use the super-micros unless i was WAY up close....stick w/ the 3.5''s and you should be pretty pleased.....plus the 3.5's have interchangeable caps...... ;)

hehe, no...more meant that I have never found the AKG's to have yummie lows...but then again, as I am learning more and more, everyone's ears hear differently, very similar to the way people precieve color. My wife and I argue you all the time, she sees blue and I see purple.... ;D

I've made some 480 tapes with "yummy" lows, it all depends on your playback system ;)
I know you like, tape for people's approval and stuff, and wave your tapes around like they're your dick...  but even you can't actually think section tapes from philips sound good.

Mics: Telefunken Elam 260, 61, 62, MBHO KA200, KA500 > Niant PFA's, AKG C34L-MS
Preamps: Grace Lunatec V2, Shure FP24
Decks: Tascam DR-2d, Zoom F8

Old rig: Recording: AKG C34 & AKG CK1X or CK2X > MK46 > 460 > Aeta Mix2000 > Sound Devices 702

Playback: Thorens TD125, Denon DVD-2900> Bel Canto DAC-1 > Audible Illusions 3B > Rogue Atlas >ZU Wax Shotgun> Hyperion 938

Those 1290's look pretty nice

here's a picture of the "the section" at jazzfest.  mics are audix.  new prototype to be added to micros group.  these were flying during csn.

met phil garfinkel  pro audio sales/artist relations.  phil@audixusa.com good guy, very knowledgeable.  he said to write him and he'll be happy to answer any questions.  sonicsense is a retailer.

shockmount is pretty cool.  not only does it hold the mics, but will hold that xy/ortf soon to be released bar.   here's a photo of the mics close up.   the one's on the left are the unbranded prototypes.
