« on: July 25, 2003, 04:47:50 AM »
Features a switchable 10dB pad and bass cut filter (12dB/octave @75 Hz).

when do you guys use this feature?

im running 391's > ps2 > modsbm1, by the way if that matters

Unless you are wayyy upfront and the spls are rattling your ribcage, leave the pad and bass rolloff settings alone.  They are not very good on the 390 series mics.

Daryan is pretty much dead on here....

never use them...they take all of the life out of the music...not sure how else to say it, but I tested it during an opening band one time, and the sound just sounds very lifeless....

The attenuators would definitely be a better option, but in my experience, I never had the 39x's run so hot that I would have the run the sbm lower than like 5 (this is before I bought a preamp) and was feeding it a transformer boosted signal.

If the bass rolloff sounds like ass can someone suggest an inline replacement?

Well, I don't have an in-line replacement, but...why not just do it in post?  Pretty easy to do, and you can even tailor the roll-off to exactly what you want to hear instead of only having 1 or 2 slope/cut-off options.

Sure, of course that is an option. Reason why I was asking about a replacement for doing rolloff before the sound gets recorded is because I'm faintly remembering that it can be 'better' to do it then versus post production.

There was a thread on this a couple months ago... Nutter chimed in a bunch on that...

I have used the bass rolloff on these mics and it turned out pretty good.  No real problems to me.  The -10db pad is another story.

I would so much rather roll the bass in the field than in post. It's a lot cleaner to my ears. Weird sound effects come out after a software EQ, I think.

Well, at least someone thinks the rolloff works well.... Daryan, why do you say it sounds like ass?

The only time I could ever forsee myself using the rolloff would be the next time STS9 comes to town, they're pretty bassy.

You shouldn't need it for STS9.  I used mine recording a Clutch show about 10 feet from the stage.  The bass was extreme so I clicked on the rolloff.
