whats gaffers tape?

Duct tape on steroids.

Stickier, more waterproof/resistant, stronger, and no nasty residue left over when you peel it off.

I tested out the whole umbrella thing and looks like duct tape and some old umbrella my mom found lying around will do great.  Tried it out and looks awesome.  But im gonna need to stake it down some how.  Ill figure something out.

One more ?, does the umbrella in anyway hinder the sound?

Try a small bunjee (sp?) cord....this is really fast and easy to take down.  Works better with a umbrella with a long handle.

I have some sand bags designed for counter-weighting studio mic booms. Throw a couple of ten pounders on the stand legs and that puppy ain't budging!
do you actually carry a couple 10lb sandbags into a show??  :yikes:

I have a cheapo umbrella that I bought at Target for a couple of bucks that's made for clamping on to a camping chair. It has a C-clap style clamp that's perfect for clamping to a stand. Like everyone else, I still use duct tape too though.

Yes. I've been using the beach chair umbrella from Walmart as well. What I dig about it is that unlike the stroller brellas which screw onto the clamp, this one has a spring loaded catch. I just leave the clamp on the stand, and if it starts raining, I simply drop the brella into place. Mics are protected in under 5 seconds...

I have a bogen umbrella clamp. Got it used with my stand.

I have to clamp (mics) to my stand to use it though. It fits on the top.
