Bsc2 > V2 > ocm R44
Where do I set the levels on the preamp and recorder?
will be running this set-up for the first time and need some advice what to start with.

I would run the R-44 with both the knobs(The trim and the gain) set at 12 o'clock. Then ajust the V2 levels until your as close to 0db without clipping. IMHO

I believe the unity setting is both knobs(trim and gain) set at 12 o'clock.

I ran a V2 > R-44 for a while and I always kept the gain knob on the R-44 one click above the lowest setting.  I Kept the smaller (inner) knob at 12:00.  Depending on the music and venue, I ran the V2 at 25 or 30 and adjusted the trim knob on the V2 accordingly.  This way I got almost all of my gain from the V2.

Per the Edirol R44 manual:

Maximum Input +24 dBu

Per the V2 manual:

MAXIMUM OUTPUT LEVEL
Balanced +27dB
Unbalanced +21dBu

If you are running xlr out of the V2, you can just run the R44 at minimal gain (outer knob at lowest setting and inner knob at 12:00).   At this setting you maximize the gain from the V2 while never clipping the V2 prior to reaching digital output of the R44 a/d.
