V2 Battery Options
« on: December 05, 2016, 11:38:10 AM »
I convinced my friend to sell me one of his V2's. He has the AC power plug for it, but does not have any battery for me

What are my options for powering the unit?

Also, is $600 a good price for a great working V2?

The Naztech PB1500 is the most readily available reliable battery out there right now and seems to be the go to battery for tapers (at least I make a lot of cables for this battery)
https://www.amazon.com/Naztech-PB15000-Universal-Charger-Extended/dp/B007URKIGC/ref=sr_1_fkmr1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1480956755&sr=8-1-fkmr1&keywords=naztech+pb+15000

$600 is a fair price for the V2 as of late, maybe on the high end, but fair in my mind.

wouldn't the sd 744 battery with sled option previously mentioned for a v3 also work on a v2?  see http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=178778.0

On TS, it seems that V2's have gone anywhere from 400-600 within the past few years.
If you can find em, I still prefer the 9v DVD "wally world" batteries for anything that can take 9v....  which includes the V2.
V2's never go outta style!  Nice find man!!

I contacted Grace Designs about getting the deck tested, cleaned, etc. The said for $125 they will test and clean the unit, and replace any parts needed. Not a bad deal.

I had my v2 sent to Grace for the checkup, thought it was worth it for the reassurance.

Also fellas, I used to power my [6v] V2's/V3's with 7.2v NIMH RC Batteries in the past too! Always powered them reliably, and now I use 9.6v NIMH RC Batteries to power my Schoeps VMS02IB Preamp reliably, as well :) So don't forget about NIMH RC packs as a good powering source. I upgraded the Tamiya connectors on my current 9.6v NIMH RC packs very recently, to those newer/sturdier 5.5mmx2.1mm Male/Female Connectors! I feel much more comfortable about those since upgrading, because I've had the shitty Tamiya's fail on me at shows MORE than once in the past :P So I'm REALLY happy about being done with the Tamiya connectors ;D

And IMO, $125 to do a FULL checkup and repair for a V2 seems VERY fair to me too! Grace has always been a standup company though! I've been trying to get one of my older taper phriends to sell me his V2 cheap too, since he hasn't used it in like 10+ years. I'm still chipping away at him every chance that I get though lol ;D I saw someone sell a V2 on TS.com recently for like $300-$400. I was F'N blown away by that! That's certainly the cheapest I've ever seen one go for on ts.com FWIW :) Someone got an AMAZING deal that day haha! I remember trading a Sonosax SXM2 for a V2 around Christmas 2006, so that would've made the V2 worth around $750-$800 even back then. My buddy's V2 whom I'm trying to buy it from, bought his V2 NEW from Sonic Sense way back in the day, and he told me he paid like $1,200-$1,500 NEW for it back then. That's why he's having such a hard time selling it to me for around $500-$600, so I totally understand. But he's also got to understand that is how much they're selling for now. Same with his Apogee 1K and Tascam DAP1 back then. They were all around like $1,500/NEW back then! Hell, after I got the Optical Mod for my V3 back in the day, I had OVER $1,500 into it, and OVER $2,600 into my SD 722 in 2006 :P

That's why I am amazed that taping is dying, because HQ gear is MUCH CHEAPER than it used to be in the 1990's/2000's IMO! I mean a pair of $300 mics and a Tascam 70D and you're around $500 and have a decent lil rig!!!! You don't NEED HQ mics & HQ external Preamps & HQ external ADC's & HQ external recorders! You JUST really need HQ mics and a decently new recorder that already has kickass preamps/ADC's/Recorders built into it :) And the price of HQ external preamps is lower than ever because everyone is selling them to run all-in-one's! That's just FINE for me, because that means I'll get better deals on external preamps hahaha :)

Sorry for the slight threadjack yinz fellas lol ;D

It looks like the Natech PB15000 I bought (new) isn't strong enough to get 3 hours out of my V2. I went to buy a second and they're sold out everywhere, unless you want to pay double for it. Does anyone have any easy other battery solutions? I'm not looking to get anything big and bulky, otherwise I'd probably just not use the V2.

thanks

Curious myself. I still have 4 9V DVD batteries, but they are old. Still getting around 5 1/2 hours per battery. Wasn't someone cracking these open and replacing cells?

One of Team NC's members had a few of these in his bag for Schoeps pre- Mytek ADC - Marantz recorder. They are compact for the Watt Hours they put out.

Nice units...I've got two and have been very happy with them...runs a power hungry Pro all in one a whole festie day and then some...Imagine it would run that V2 all three days at a festival.

A bit large but fits in the power section of the Petrol bag I use.

I surprised as the 3 hours out of the Natech PB15000 for just the V2.   I use it to power my V2 and my fostex FR-2LE.  Taped Gov Mule and Galactic and still had 2 of the 4 bars left.

Wondering if this could be an option:

Thanks. After I posed the question I thought, of course, the V2 requires the 4 pin XLR connector at it's end, pinned out properly for either 6 or 12 Volt. The Maxoak stock cable won't have that.

Would one of these work with my 6V V2 or do I have to switch it to 12V?

This is what ended up buying.

MAXOAK 50000mAh 6 Port(5/12/20v) Portable Charger External Battery Power Bank for Laptop & Notebook–Most of Sony Dell Hp Toshiba Samsung Lenovo Acer IBM NEC Mobile,Tablet(not for Apple Laptop) https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00YP823NA/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_HPqWzbSQ9T7Y3

I ran the V2 last night using this new battery. It has four lights to show it's power level. After taping Gov't Mule it still had all four lights lit.

Would one of these work with my 6V V2 or do I have to switch it to 12V?

v2 can run on 6v-12v. You can feed the 6v v2 a 12v power source. it will just run a little hotter to the touch

The Talentcell 12v does a nice job and the 12v/9v version can can run the pre + your recorder or ADC.

Thanks. I also took your tip on those $15 batteries and bought 3 of them.

I wonder if the cable I have (9V DVD battery cable made by Ted) will work with the Talentcell?

^ I'm prettt sure the 9V DVD cable tip is a smaller diameter than the 12V connection for the Talentcell. I recently had the latter made from Ted and owned a 9V cable some years back.

Got the battery today. Ordered a cable from Ted. So will the 9V out power my 6V V2 properly? I don’t think that question was answered. How long will this battery power just a V2?

Thanks.

So finally got around to testing this battery. It kicks ass. Ran it for 10 hours yesterday and only dropped one bar. It’s smaller than 2 9v DVD batteries taped together. Gonna run it some more today. I used the 9V output. Also going to try the USB out into my Mix Pre 6. Not sure if it will work properly. I have one USB A to C cable somewhere.

The maxoak $99 deal is up again on amazon.

However, if all you need to do is power your V2, the talentcell battery linked below will more than do the trick at a fraction of the price.

There is a nice mod to remove the switch and add a locking power output too ---> http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=184489.msg2248074#msg2248074 .

^ I should really look into that mod. It's just a matter of time before I accidentally flip the power switch mid-show. Gaffin' it down until then.

Maxoak looks good, however I just ordered a second Tallentcell a few days ago.  It hits all these bullet points for me:

>12VDC, 9VDC, and 5VDC (USB) outputs, all usable simultaneously.
>Independent dedicated voltage outputs (not switchable or auto-sensing).
>Actual on/off switch (not a momentary switch, typical of auto-shut off function batteries which shut down if power-draw becomes insufficient to keep it on)
>AC or 12VDC re-charging
>Runs my gear all day with power to spare
>Good power meter
>The functions I want, yet simple and straightforward.

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B016BJCRUO/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s02?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Can choose various smaller capacities on that Amazon page to suit your needs.  There are two standard case sizes into which they squeeze their different capacity offerings.  The smaller case versions are half as thick as this one, which may fit better in the bag for some folks.  I like this size for maximum capacity in a reasonable size and cost, and I rarely run it down more than about 1/4 down recording 6 channels into a DR680MK2 with phantom powering on all channels.

I just bought a second one so that I can (probably) go an entire 3 day festival while primitive camping without having to recharge.

That mod is pretty involved. I wouldn’t want to try it. I’d rather do the plastic guard over the toggle switch that gets mentioned.

If anyone cares I was doing a time test on my V3 running the maxoak. So AKG414XLS/ST over the years I have found these mics to be POWER HUNGRY when run with the V3. So after about 5 hours of 414 >V3>COAX > the Maxoak dropped 1 light.

I bought 2 of those batteries. 1 to run the preamp and 1 to run the HDP2. the HDP@ never lost a light during the same timed session.
