I very possibly shut down my (Rockboxed) H120 too quickly last night - the recording I thought I was making doesn't appear to there this morning...

Is it possible to loose a recording by switching off before stopping the recording? I wouldn't have thought it was possible, given that 'stop' and 'off' are the same button.

It is possible, of course, that I somehow managed not to hit record in the first place. But I'm pretty sure that I did; I seem to remember checking that the filesize counter was going up.

Anyway, is there any way of accessing the H120's hard drive to look for evidence of the unsaved file?

Any help would be much appreciated.

I don't think you lost the recording by pushing the stop button incorrectly.  When the battery dies, the iRiver with Rockbox will still write the file recorded to that point before shutting down.  I think no matter what the situation, it always writes the file before shutting down. 

As for looking for the file, maybe Petur will stop by and chime in.

I believe this typically results in file header problems.  It's been discussed here a number of times.  Do a search and I'm sure you'll find the seps to fix it.

I think no matter what the situation, it always writes the file before shutting down. 

I think it really is looking like I just didn't start recording properly -it was a 2nd recorder started in a rush mid-set- I couldn't really see how else I'd end up with nothing on the disc.

I don't think it's a file header problem as there doesn't seem to be a file (or header) there at all. I was just hoping that if the 'write' never got completed, there might be a load of orphaned (and rescuable) data still on the HD.

Oh well, it's not a great loss as I made a sbd of the gig - just thought it could do with some audience/ambience.

the only thing i can think of is to try using file recovery programs. theyre usually used to search drives for deleted files. but can also be used to search memory cards or the like for data that has already been removed. such as pics/vids that have already been taken off a digital camera, these programs can sometimes find whats left of the files and piece them back together. so you could try that. no guarantees itll work, and if it does find something, it might not be the complete show or it might be glitchy or something but its certainly worth a try. they also work best at recovering the more recent files. so if you havent recorded anything since the file youre trying to recover, youll have a better chance of success. one final tip: the names of the files dont always match up with the contents of the file itself. for instance, you might find a recording labeled as one date/time, but if you recovered it and listened to it, it might be a different recording altogether. so...dont go by the file names 100%. my advice would be to recover whatever audio files the programs find and check them yourself. you can search for some if you want but i have a few i rar'ed up for ya. they are all portables so no need to install anything.
