DPA +Iriver help
« on: January 14, 2007, 06:35:55 AM »
I know this is short notice but I'll be using my Iriver H320 for the first time in just less than 36 hours and was wondering if anyone could give me a vague idea of were to set my recording levels...

I'm using a pair of DPA 4060s and a Sound Pros 9v battery box. I'll be using Rockbox's safety clip AGC feature but I'd like to get an idea of where to set the intitial levels without being too conservative. I'll be sat about 3/4 rows back in a 3000ish capacity concert hall-type venue. The music will be vocal + orchestra. For reference, when I last used my CSB>D8 in similar circumstances at the venue (Ryan Adams solo), I was somewhere around "9" on the D8 input dial.

New gear anxiety...  ??? Should've tested it out at a less pressing gig first, I guess.

Any help much appreciated,

Yousef

i wouldn't be too worried. saftey clip is a beautiful thing.  just go in there, set your levels conservatively during the opening act or even the PA music and you should be ok.  if i had to guess. 0 - 10 gain? also depends on your positiion. and my experiences are with 4061.  good luck.

I don't think you get clipping problems while using DPA mics.
As firmdragon levels depend on position, type of music, volume of PA... using AGC should give you a rough estimation of levels you should use but I would disable it once you get used to your mics and iriver.

AGC in the case of the iriver's saftey setting is a misnomer.  it only sets your levels when you clip.  thus if you're not clipping, it's not on.

might be too late...but with safety on, set those levels aggressively. i'd run closer to +15......that SP9v gives no boost...so you should be right...but that might just be me...and of course it depends on your situation. ;)

Thanks for the advice.

As it happens, I was seated too near the front to get a decent recording, my battery box-mic connection has developed a nasty crackle and I somehow managed not to tape the first set.

Other than that, everything was great...
