"Unfinished" WAV file on R-09.. any way to recover?
« on: November 12, 2009, 09:25:20 AM »
I did some searching and can't find an answer, but it seems there must be one..
Taping my band's show last week, someone knocked my Edirol R-09 off the amp. It pulled the mic cable out, fell to the floor, and cut off. The unit works fine, I started a new recording and got the rest of the show, but that initial 1.28 gb file doesn't play in quicktime. It's duration is 00:00 in all the file identifiers.
I believe the same thing may happen if the battery dies on an R-09 while it's taping.  That final closure process never happens on the unit so it can be read as a playable WAV file.
I now have the file on my computer, but have since formatted the R-09. It can be transferred back, obviously, but perhaps if the solution is internal to the R-09 I've screwed that up.
Thanks in advance for any help!
Stratton

Check the last two sections in this post: http://taperssection.com/index.php?topic=117279.0

I believe there is also a "repair" option in one of the menus of the R09 but you would need the file on the unit to use it and if formatted I'm not sure it would repair the file even if it was transferred back. I don't have an R09 so can't tell you much more.

I'll see if I can find a post above the recovery/repair option. I'll post a link if I find it.

Quicktime uses a "container" format for all its media files.  If a file is incomplete, it has trouble framing the data with its container format and will not be able to play it.  Not necessarily anything wrong with the file contents.  Surely you will be able to find some kind of audio editor which will open the file and allow you to re-save it with proper headers...
