« on: August 28, 2009, 04:58:37 PM »

When running, the way you see the capsule in the pic above. That thould be the side view on the stand?

Hope that made sense.

Thanks
Jeff

yes that is the side.  I put the side with the symbol on the right side as you look at the front of it but, I don't think that would make a difference.  When looking at the front of the cap the slots should be up and down.

enjoy the m/s.   I love it but, mixing it in post drives me nuts.  I am always changing the setting thinking it sounds better than before.   I have to finally tell myself that is it and not look back.

If your unsure which is left/right, when you setup, snap your fingers on the left. When you decode the MS signal later, you'll know whether to flip the channels or not.

ditto, I'm trying to get better about it. whether thats happening or not is a different question.

When I had my m/s setup I took lots of pictures to help me remember.  Here is the correct ak20/ak40 setup picture (Note: the direction of fig 8 logo pattern on the ak20).

The front of the fig.8 should point to the *left* side.

Now that I see it in actual use as opposed to a catalog photo, I'm not sure that this particular dual-capsule mounting accessory (I realize that it's Neumann's) is optimally designed for M/S recording with an AK 20 capsule.

The two microphones' diaphragms should be at the same distance from the center of the direct sound sources, but from the photo, it looks as if the figure-8 microphone's diaphragm is about 1/4" to 1/2" ahead of the cardioid's. The two diaphragms are perpendicular to one another, so this is a matter of getting their center lines to line up. The AK 40's diaphragm is just slightly behind its front screen, i.e. about even with the top of the printed markings that are on the circumference of the capsule. But the AK 20's diaphragm is centered within the slots in the grille, no? (It should be visible if you shine a flashlight through the capsule head.)

The AK 20 capsule is taller/longer than all the others in the series not only because of the capsule's internal orientation, but also because there's a rotating swivel joint between the barrel that contains the FET, etc., and the capsule head itself. It looks as if the designers of this dual-capsule mount didn't take that difference into account.

I would use a dead rat custom that you can place over both caps as I found the figure8 to be extra sensative outside.

Love the MS setup, haven't run it since picking up the R44 ...

The ak20 cap diaphragm center...

Ok so I looked at my Ak20 cap and the center of the diaphragm lines up with the middle or 3rd slat on the side of the cap.  I'll post a picture later.

So it looks like the mount does not line them up properly.  I have relayed my findings to Brian about this with the hope of making an MS bar that holds then in proper alignment.
