Where to get attenuator cables?
« on: June 23, 2006, 05:27:13 PM »
I'm going to be doing some soundboards next week (for some sweet matrix action) and I'm worried that the JB3 won't be able to handle the signal.  I've read that soundboards put out a signal that is way too hot for the JB3 (or even the UA-5) so I want to get some attenuators to drorp down the signal 20db or so.

A few questions:

1) Where can I get these? Does Guitar Center or a similar B&M-type store carry them?

2) Are they typically RCA or XLR? I'm not sure what the board outputs yet (still finding out from the higher-ups)... but does it matter? Can I just get a barrel converter if it's different than the cable?

3) Once I have the attenuators going from the board, can I just get a Y-adapter from Radioshack to bring them down to a 1/8" mini plug for the JB3?

i have a 20db drop cable from microphonemadness, i got it at cascademedia for $25
its a 1/8 female > 1/8 male
so if you already have rca/xlr sbd cables you could get that to run after your "Y"
Mics - AKG ck61/ck63 (c480b & Naiant actives), SP-BMC-2
XLR Cables - Silver Path w/Darktrain stubbies
Interconnect Cables - Dogstar (XLR), Darktrain (RCA > 1/8) (1/8 > 1/8), and Kind Kables (1/8f > 1/4)
Preamps - Naiant Littlebox & Tinybox
Recorders - PCM-M10 & DR-60D

That's a stereo plug on the end, correct? I would just need one cable to go into the JB3 and a Y-Adapter to go from 1/8" > 1/4" x 2, right?

thats it

you would go (lets say the sbd has 1/4 outs)...
dual 1/4 > 1/8 > mic madness > JB3

the dual 1/4 > 1/8 would be your "Y", so you would have 2 cables total
1 - dual 1/4 > 1/8 male
1 - mic madness attenuator
Mics - AKG ck61/ck63 (c480b & Naiant actives), SP-BMC-2
XLR Cables - Silver Path w/Darktrain stubbies
Interconnect Cables - Dogstar (XLR), Darktrain (RCA > 1/8) (1/8 > 1/8), and Kind Kables (1/8f > 1/4)
Preamps - Naiant Littlebox & Tinybox
Recorders - PCM-M10 & DR-60D

Thanks.  I went ahead and overnighted the cable last night because I need it for some shows this week.  Glad to hear I only need one and not two.

Off to RadioShack I go for some Y-Adapter goodness.
