Which Mics for a MD recorder?
« on: February 11, 2004, 07:51:25 AM »
I'm going Friday to purchase a Sony MZ-S1 MD player/recorder. Now i'm on the hunt for some microphones. As this will be my first adventure into the world of Taping, i'm looking for somthing relitively cheap..not crap, but cheap. If you guys could recommend somthing, that would be great, and if any of you tape with the MZ-S1 or a similar model feel free to give me any tips you think would be helpful. I plan on using the recorder to tape my bands shows in local bars, and would love to tape some DMB and other such shows as well..

Check into the SP-CMC-4 set from that SoundProfessionals site. I don't know if that Sony model has a microphone in or not, but you WILL NOT use it in any case. Grab a battery box with gain controll and bass rolloff, you'll need it to bring your signal up to line level, and also to set your recording levels, as many of the Sony MDs are not able to adjust the gain when you're recording, you have to pause it first. The gooseneck T-bar to hold your mics up and a simple mic stand should be all you need to get started. My first "rig" was the SP-CMC-4s, batt. box w/ rolloff, a Sharp MDSR-60 deck, the gooseneck T-bar and an On-Stage brand 8' mic stand from Guitar Center. I think the whole setup cost me somthing like $400, top to bottom. I still use that setup to stealth when I don't want to burn a DAT for a local show.

I've got these for sale right now and have some great tapes from them. :guitarist:

Small & stealthy, great sound.  And with the stereo gain knob on the battery box you don't have to worry about not being able to adjust the levels on the Sony MD deck.

first, don't buy an MD

and if you do, why are you going with the sony "sport" model?

save yourself 100 kablingy and get a sharp MT180

second, olyrc's mics are the best bang for the buck in that price range, especially if size is your prize.  I highly recommend them, although the AT853Rx pair is a noteworthy step up.

If you have to get a MD get Sharp, that's what I have, more live-taping friendly.

If you don't have to get MD, try looking at a nomad jb3, an iriver.  cost a little more.  if you plan to be taping for a while then it will be worth it, but not absolutely necessary.

if you have any questions feel free to pm me.
