Potential Oade M118 Mod, What Would You Do?
« on: November 20, 2012, 10:30:58 AM »
I have an Oade m118, which is just the 18volt version of the m148.  I did a simple mod on it to remove the internal batteries so that I can power it from external batteries.  Now the preamp has a ton of extra space on the inside where the batteries used to be.

This preamp must be at least 30 years old and it looks it.  The outside of the case is ratty and aged.  This is one with the unfinished steel case, not the black cases of the newer m148.  The battery meter glass and the battery meter have been broken ever since I've owned it and probably for a decade before I got it.  With the mod I did, I no longer need an on-off switch to conserve battery power.

The guts are easy to pull out, so I'm thinking of just transferring the guts to another, smaller external box that's half the size and eliminating the switch and of course the meter (since my externals have their own meter.)

What do you guys think?  Go for it or leave the 'brick' a ratty ass looking brick that's twice the size it needs to be.

I value smaller boxes.

I've seen a couple of bricks in my travels, and they all look various degrees of shitty. People don't buy them for their appearance... (so I don't think maintaining the original box makes sense).

I say leave it.  It's part of taper history.  Not everything needs to be shiny and new.

Can Oade get you another box, one that is in better shape at least?

I'm sure the box could be "prettied up" quite easily if you unpacked its guts -- could be interesting to send it to a powder coater.  That said, I view the increasing rattiness of my m148 as a badge of honor.

He hasn't made these for a long time, so I'd bet he'd have to go out and find one just like me.  The box used on the m148 and m118 aren't anything special...looks to me like it's just a stock metal box with four 24mm openings drilled in for the XLRs.

I've decided I'm gonna replace it.  It's not necessarily about looks, but the replacement will be half the size.  That said, I understand what you guys are saying about vintage looks, but if I ever end up selling, I think the old box ultimately detracts from the perceived value because with the meter broken there's the perception that the preamp isn't fully fuctional.

Do the easy swap, but hold on to the original enclosure with its taper provenance.  If you ever sell it, include both.

FWIW, I know the original M118 case is a Hammond 1590D.
