Sorry to hijack the thread (but this is somewhat related): For the following DPA's, that are terminated to TA4F mini XLR's, how do you connect those to 48V Phantom Power via a standard XLR cable?  Is that even possible?

Would the Audio-Technica AT8538 work?

^ Pretty sure you'll need a PFA of some sort to run those with P48.  Those wireless things are usually battery box type voltage.

The AT module steps down the voltage from 11-52V > 9V (if i remember correctly) so that would be appropriate but it has a connector for TA3 so you would have to reterminate the mics and make sure the correct signal was on the correct wire/pins.

Yeah, most similar P48(XLR)>low-voltage-adapters designed for 2-wire powering, providing 5 to 9 volts to the microphone will work, given the correct connection or adapter.   Naiant, DPA, AT, Sure, Senn, Audix, Tram, Sony, Sanken, etc.. among others.

Pillowman,  It might work to plug your 4061 pair directly into the R-09 with PIP switched on, but they will not be optimally powered.  I did that a few times with a few different pairs of DPAs.  Some did not work at all, some did.  If they do work they will have a lower maximum SPL before overload and may distort.  Better to power them correctly even if they work.

Your best option to run the TA4F terminated 4061s with P48 might be to purchase one or two PFA cables from Naiant that go from TA4M > XLR M, they would include the voltage step-down circuitry.

I use Naiant PFAs for DPA 4060/4061/4098 as well as AT853.  They work great.  Jon will put whatever mini-xlr you want on them.

That solution will not work for Pillowman into an R-09 however. He'll need either a battery box or low-voltage mic-power preamp.

thanks for jumping on my question ... will give it a try tonight but will run 2 rigs ;-) so everything will be fine !
happy taping 2 all !

after some testing last night I can tell that this combo R09 > mic in > DPA4061 doesn't work.
everything is missing like level, dynamic, bass a.s.o.
good that I was running a second rig :-)

Maybe for some limited number of people who only run dpa lavs and commit to not running other mics there could be a recorder mod possible to change  the pip bias resistors. If this could be done it looks like no battery box would be needed.

Or just get a Marantz PMD-620 off of E-Bay. They have higher PIP than most other hand helds (I think they say it's 5 volts but I measured it at 4.6). I've recorded loud music with DPA 4060's > PMD-620 with no issues. If used to record extremely loud music like stack taping, a battery box could be required though. I didn't test the combo for that.
AT853's (all caps)/CM-300 Franken Naks (CP-1,2,3)/JBMod Nak 700's (CP-701,702) > Tascam DR-680
Or Sonic Studios DSM-6 > M10
