SmartCharger Love
« on: December 09, 2004, 10:28:27 PM »
Just got a Chun Smart Cahrger from Batteryspace.com for my 12V 4Ah LiMH laptop pack.
I had been charginging it with the wallwart that it came with.

The wallwart got warm, and so did the batteries(ouch). It took 12 hours to full charge and I had to use a light timer to be sure not to overcharge it.

The SmartCharger takes about 3 hours, and turns itself off. Everything stayed cool, charger and especially the batteries.
Heat is the battery killer, especially from the inside out.

Thanks you Dr.Chun !  All You Volts Belong to Me !      ;D

They do, they're built into the batteries themselves -- (at least on my walmart-sourced battery)

all true -- the problem (as I understand it) is that lithium ion batteries are pretty darned finnicky (sp?) about how they're charged, thus I suspect these are charging as fast as they can without damage

you guys inspired me to dig up some information to share.
http://www.powerstream.com/li.htm talks about safety and charging.
and this link gives some simple guidelines and more information on the low down of lithium
http://www.batteryuniversity.com/parttwo-34.htm
for example a tip from the site says
"If you have a spare lithium-ion battery, use one to the fullest and keep the other cool by placing it in the refrigerator. Do not freeze the battery. For best results, store the battery at 40% state-of-charge"
A lot of you guys have echoed a lot of this in other threads etc.
Hope this helps everyone in some way and is not too redundant..

i always kept my valence for my old lappy in the fridge

ive always heard that its best to store them fully charged in the fridge, or 40% in room temp

i noticed a huge difference in the amount of drain occurred in the batt when keeping it in the fridge!
