Stupid question. Looks like I lost my power supply for my F8. Do I have to drop $30 on one or will other 12v adapters work okay?

Other 12VDC power sources can work fine.

F8 works with supplies ranging from 9 to 16V DC
F8n works with supplies ranging from 9 to 18V DC

Not sure of amperage output requirement.

I don't own one of these, but would guess you need to know which contact is positive and which is negative before using a third party power supply.

Same here.  I'm not going to bother with it.

I've seen other confused by the MS link setting, and now I am too.

I set it for MS link.   During recording, and upon playback, I hear two separate mono mics.  It's not encoding for either live monitoring purposes or playback.  If it's a two step process, or there's another setting that locks this option out, I'm not finding it on the unit or seeing it on the manual.

I usually don't want to use this setting, preferring to encode in post, but at times I want access.   I'd particularly like access for live monitoring checks, maybe to do a test with it on to see what I'm getting, then switch it off for most recording.

It's wonky and confusing!  I don't have a good answer for you, and half-suspect it is not really implemented correctly (at least it is not well implemented).

I rarely monitor during recording except to check for clean signal in each channel if there is a problem, so while recording I would only want to hear the non-encoded M/S channels anyway.  It would be nice for sending a patch out or making a simultaneous rough stereo mix though.

Most of my experience is with trying to get it to work on playback.  I cannot get it to encode to LR during playback unless monitoring for that pair is set pre-fader, but then there is no fader (or width) control over that pair in the stereo mix. Level and width are predetermined by whatever the recording trim was set at during the recording.  If set to post-fader the two channels translate as two separate mono channels in the mix, with level and pan control.  There really should be a post-fader M/S>L/R option.

The first few recordings I made recorded all channels to 2-channel files, but for everything since, I've recorded individual mono files.  Not sure if that effects how this is working.

I've been meaning to mess around with it more, but don't want to accidentally set it to record encoded L/R instead of discrete M/S.

Yeah the manual is ‘translation wording’ and not terribly clear in meaning.

Dropped the files into post, they are individual mic signals on tracks 1 and 2, require encoding.  Checked the F8n again, stereo link for tracks 1 and 2 are set for M/S.   1 and 2 are also trim linked.

OK, I'm sure this got covered back in the thread somewhere.  Apologies.  Still doesn't make total sense.

From the manual under headphone output, there's an MS setting that will play the tracks back in encoded stereo, but:

Quote
This is disabled for stereo-linked tracks that have Stereo Link Mode set to MS Stereo Link.

Similar setting for Main and Sub outputs.

I can't figure out why tracks 1/2 were not encoded into a stereo signal when MS Stereo Link was set under Input.  I suspected Trim Link might have something to do with it, but the manual says

Quote
The input levels of tracks set to MS Stereo Link will also be linked if those tracks are put into groups.

which I want, and it does not say that trim link negates the MS setting.

I also keep the M/S pair channels trim-linked.. all 8 actually.

Should have some free time to play around with this more next week.

Edit- I  forgot to come back and update. I no longer do this.  I wanted to be able to trim-link all 8 channels to allow adjustment of input trim across all channels simultaneously with one knob turn, but later realized that when doing that all channels are forced to have identical trims.  That is not what I want.  I want to be able to set relative trim differences, then link them so as to adjust simultaneously while retaining the relative differences.  That is how the channel ganging feature behaves on the Tascam DR-680.
