24 Channel TRS Split Snake
« on: April 27, 2012, 11:57:57 AM »
Perhaps I'm not using proper terms but I can't seem to find what I'm looking
for via a google search.

I want to hook up two consoles to an HD24.  So I need to take the direct outs
(TRS) from each console into an A/B box then out to the HD24.

Thoughts?

I can't say I've ever heard of an AB switch for 24 channels.  And the Patchbay would need to be Passive or else it's gonna send signal back to the other console.  Only foolproof thing I can think of is a 48 track board that has some combination of 24 outputs, a combination of groups, sends and main outs.  But beyond that I don't know how you'd do it.

This is what I was thinking of. Unless you have to switch between the boards quickly, you just connect the one that is currently running.

:hmmm:  I really need an A/B switch, the swap between boards could be less than a minute.

Another console isn't an option I can consider.

I've never seen a switch for that many channels. I'd have some worries with the other suggestions including my own. Ground loops, impedance issues, etc. Transformer isolated splitters may work. Have you checked with the local big sound companies to see if they have anything? They may be willing to rent gear.

Checking with some custom snake companies now, but hell it might be
cheaper/easier to simply buy another hd24 and have one for each console.

Have asked on your local team board.  You'd be surprised how many tapers  have HD-24's

Lease or borrow one maybe?

I'm thinking the "permanant install" approach, so I'd prefer to own it.
Not sure what they rent/lease for.

We're a pretty small team, and I don't know anyone that owns an HD24.

Sounds best to own another then.

A friend wants to sell his Alesis 24 track HD recorder ($1250). Its set up with lightpipe and ADAT. He also has a Yamaha board also set up with lightpipe that is up for sale ($3k for both). I can put you in touch if you are interested. He used it to record on the road with the Magic Band (Capt. Beefheart) and Tommy Tutone but health issues are keeping him closer to home where he already has a full studio. Great guy, very trustworthy.
