ADK microphones
« on: December 09, 2003, 11:15:22 AM »
I keep hearing good things about the LD microphones, but not so much about the SC-1 or SC-T SD's. I haven't heard any SD sources either. I've read Gerards's posts here and he seems to be very attentive to the taper community. Are the SD mics any good?

Calico, I own a pair of SC-T's and have been extremely happy with them.

I only have one or two things on the etree archive, but have plenty more here at home.  Have some nice Peter Prince, moe., and other crap here that I haven't uploaded... Let me know if you wanted some!

8/17/03 Derek Trucks Band
http://www.archive.org/audio/etree-details-db.php?id=6995
(really happy w/this recording)

9/6/03 Railroad Earth
http://www.archive.org/audio/etree-details-db.php?id=6979
(note: Ran XY for this and not as happy with that config really)

The only downside to these mic's is the lack of hypers and omni's. That's the reason I just bought new mic's and plan on selling these shortly.  Calico, we could've just traded! :-P

How would you characterise the sound of them? Bright/Dark
Accurate/Coloured?

Also, what's the diff between the -1 and the -T?

I'd call them "bright and accurate" if I were to term them I guess...  Very nice tight bass response and the highs can get a little bright if pushed but sound very good for their price.  Like their low-end a lot and have never really pulled a bad tape with them.

The SC-1 is a "econo" version while the SC-T's are in their "audiophile" series.  Different caps, not sure how much the bodies very.  JP would definately know more.

Check out those shows, or if their too large, etc. let me know and I could put up some MP3's for you tonight at some point...

Is this why you didn't like the x/y recording? Because it emphasised the brightness?
I'll DL the DTB and take a listen.

It was when I was just getting them and think ther was a few things in it that I didn't find pleasing:
 - I did it with cards at 90* and not really configured right causing the soundstage to feel sort of "unfocused"
 - It feels more "distant" then it should've
 - Highs are high and the lows are too submissive

I can't pin that to the microphones or my improper mic configuration..

Don't "quote me" on them being bright and accurate.  I'm far from an audiophile and am more of a rookie then anything.  Best bet is to download some :)  I'll PM you tonight when I get back from finals with a login and password to download some MP3's of some stuff..  Maybe some of this band Stratospheerius, who has a violin player similar to Jean Luc Ponty (Zappa, etc.).  Might help illustrate if they're really "bright" or not.

No need to make MP3's I'm DLing the DTB now.
I'm just curious more than anything. Like I said I hear good things about the LD mic's they make . Just wondering if the SD's are good as well. I'm also very impressed with Gerard posting here and being so responsive to ADK users. He seems to know his stuff and is genorous with his knowledge.

Also Calico, the sound guy didn't get that Derek Trucks "dialed in" until atleast the 3rd or 4th song.. The first starts with a very hot bass drum beat that had us all adjusting our levels like crazy and the second features the sound guy cranking the tambourine for a few seconds :P

Past that not a bad tape for being in the midsts of thousands of drunk Erie people..  Brian Skalinder and Alex Herd both ran tape there, in nearly the exact same spot, as well if you wanted to compare it against some Schoeps & Superlux Omni's.

Actually, I didn't realize until you wrote that, but I already have Alex's recording. :) I may as well get Brian's too at some point now!

Please use the ADK Forum! I pop in here once in while but I check the ADK Forum many times a day.

It's no secret: I think that the SDs are the weak link in the ADK line...
The problem is down to capsule design/quality/QC...

We yelled and screamed and got the ADK LD capsule production on the right track. I'm actually very happy with the Hamburg and Vienna capsules. Well, considering the street price of the mics of course! OTOH the TC, TT TL, SL and CE models use very tight tolerance capsules, you can buy one, buy the same model months later and they will sound the same. Really!

We'll keep you posted; believe me, when we have a really nice SD mic, you'll know!!!
