« on: December 11, 2003, 01:34:02 PM »
hello,

I'm looking to purchase a quality mic for my Sharp MD to record my West African drum ensembe, drum lessons and workshops.  i'd be willing to spend up to $200 for the mic and whatever it needs for power etc...anyone have experience recording such music?  thanks in advance.

Josh

is this gonna be for stealth situations? or open?  there are many options either way. depends on what you want to do with it, the more you wanna do the more you should invest.

the easiest would probably be to go with something from sound pro's http://www.soundprofessionals.com/cgi-bin/gold/category.cgi?category=9015&template=home  they should be able to get you what you need, and be unobtrusive for taping, and stealthing.  good luck man.

Soundprofessionals is a good place to start.  I still have these for my MD setup:

http://www.soundprofessionals.com/cgi-bin/gold/category.cgi?category=120&item=SP-CMC-2&type=store

used with this:

Those mics will work fine as well their other similiar mics. Now the Battery Box, or Slim Battery module as they call it, is used to power your microphones with simply a 9volt battery (lasts about a year).  If the situation you are recording is quite  loud (i.e. a standard rock concert) it will allow you to use the line in if your MD recorder which will sound better.  It also will give your mics a little more dynamic range. This is not absolutely necessary though.

Getting the music onto your computer to be burned (if that's what you want to do) is another story.  You will have to spend more money to get a digital conversion (also will sound better) but you can do analog as long as you're happy with the results.  :)
