Title: Elementary question: Cable ties
Post by: acidjack on November 23, 2009, 12:00:10 PM
I'm a little embarassed to ask such a basic question, but I searched "cable ties" and didn't see a good answer.  What do people use to secure cables to their stand?  I've got some of those velcro cable ties where you have to thread it together, and don't really like that - it never gets tight enough and is a bitch to use in the dark.  I've seen some big Shure ones on stands, but googling "Shure cable ties" doesn't seem to get it.  I've just been using small bits of tape, but that is a pain for a variety of reasons, and it looks crappy.

What do people like?

On my APIC extension pole I like to use Windtech cable clamps http://windtech.ws/miscellaneous.html (http://windtech.ws/miscellaneous.html) but on my stand they are too small. My bicycle has something very similar but made of metal to hold the brake and shift cables but I haven't been to my local bicycle shop to see if they would work on my stand.

Thanks!  Hadn't thought of that, but that looks like it should do the trick.

Threaded velcro ties?  Guess I don't know what you are talking about.
The ones I have are just a velcro strap.  They work fine.

The ones I purchased have a small cut in one end, so you have to thread the small strap through the cut (like a belt) and then pull it back. It never secures well and is kind of a mess.  I'm sure there are better velcro straps...

I guess mine are like that also, just don't use them that way.
Don't really see the point in "threading" them.

I thread mine. I use them purely to keep the cord near the stand is all. Is there any particular reason why you want to cinch them up tight? Just curious.

I use the velcro belt-style ties....  got em at Target...  3M brand....  work just fine.  But if I lose a few and am in a pinch, twist ties from a loaf of bread or something work just as well....  I always keep some twist ties in my bag.

I've done that too.

the ones i have can be threaded.  but if i thread them, it is on the cable, and then wrap it to the stand.

typically, unless i have plenty of time to kill and its my stand, i dont thread the stand OR the cable... just wrap it up... i have been able to do this in the dark and drunk very well...

I've never had a problem with my velcro-type strips, but I've also used electrical tape, twist ties 'helixed' them around the stand and found items.  Whether or not I use something depends on the venue and crowd: more casual and less crowded means I often won't use them.

I use the velcro ties,  and thread them to my cables, so when I coil them up I can keep the cable knot free. I also use them a bit to wrap around the stand - they also stick well to the carpet of many PA speakers, or stages.
however to secure it to my stand after ,my cables are plugged in, I do a quick wrap around the stand with a twist. this works great, no need for velcro, and if you need to lower that stand you don't have the ties slowing you down.

They sell rolls of double-sided velcro at Michael's (the craft store).  I think that it costs something like $8 per roll, but you get yards of the stuff.  Just cut off as much as you want and you are good.

I like these cable ties:

These are 8" long which is long enough for a 50' mic cable.  If you need a longer tie, you can daisy chain two or more together.  They are cheap and 100 of them may last you your lifetime.  Amazon has as good a price as anyone, if you get the "free" shipping.

You can get Velcro cable ties at Home Depot. I use them on my cables to keep them coiled, but on my stand I often use these spring-loaded hair claw things my wife uses in her hair. (When she's not using them  :D ) They're small, 1" or so, and the hold the cable tight enough that it takes the weight off the mics.

I use gaffer's tape for this - easy on, easy off, holds things securely and is adaptable to most situations.  I find a roll of gaffer's tape indispensable at shows.

LOL.  Who does it look crappy to?  Stevie Wonder perhaps?  :)  j/k

It's dark so I don't worry about looks anymore...but then I never worried too much about that.

I personally like tape best...easy on, easy off, don't have to worry about losing anything.

Second favorite is the same stuff you use, only I don't use the hole in the end.  I just wrap the velcro around in a sorta modified 'candy cane' manner.  This way I can keep hold of the one end as I tighten the velcro around the stand with the other, overlapping the velcro so it all holds tight.  I don't have any problems getting it nice and tight, but frankly tight is only important to me when it comes to ... well I'll keep sexual references out of one of my posts for a change.

Gaffer or duct tape is what I have used to secure the mic cables at the top below the stereo bar for over 2 decades of open concert taping. I don't secure the cables for looks.

Simply put, a hapless patron that grabs your stand and/or cables in the dark by mistake cannot easily cause your mics to be pulled off the stand and hit the floor when a strip of duct tape is used to secure the cables firmly to the mic stand at the top. I also occasional place a second strip at the base of the stand as well.

The velcro ties are neat and everything, but are only effective to keep the cables together and against the stand when no force is applied to the cables. Over the years, I have seen many a pair of mics hit the deck because they were not secured to the stand with tape, only velcro ties. Not something I ever want to experience. YMMV

I agree with all of this, other than I would avoid duct tape and stick strictly with gaffer's tape.  Duct tape leaves sticky residue on your cables, stand etc. and will also likely piss off the house engineer if you stick it to anything in the venue...they hate duct tape.  Gaffer's tape is cheap and universally useful for a zillion things at a show.

This what I use.  You can get a pack at lowes for 2 or 3 bucks that have 100 in them. I keep 5 or so on my cables and usually keep a roll in the bag as well.  I use them all over the house to keep my cables organized because that is one of my pet peeves.
